OPPORTUNITIES IN NORTH-EAST JORDAN
Within the context of a UK-government-sponsored biodiversity study ('Darwin
Initiative') in the western half of Jordan's north-east pan-handle, there
are opportunities for qualified volunteers to make a study of resident and
migratory birds, with a special interest in birds of prey, either in the
spring of 1998 (March- May) or the autumn of 1998 (Sep-Oct).
One site of special interest will be the permanent pool at Burqa.
Logistic support in the field, with a well-equipped field base at Safawi,
will be provided by the Jordan Badia Research and Development Programme. Mr
Sultan Mashaqbah, the Jordanian field coordinator of the Darwin Initiative
and based at Safawi, will be responsible for people in the field. With
sufficient notice, beds, food and transport and some basic field equipment
(tents, etc) are available.
The winter 1997/98 has been relatively wet so that the Burqa pool will be
well replenished, and there will be some significant vegetation in the
desert.
This work is urgent and fits in well with BirdLife International's Middle
East Programme, and would be ideal for those with a sabbatical or a holiday
slot.
