The Ohio State University proposed such a fee for all students, but it was ruled to be an increase in fees, which is regulated by state law. Now a few departments charge a special computing fee to students with majors in the department. This, too, is being worked out to varying degrees of satisfaction. Much discussion on these topics have been in the Columbus press. Due to budget cuts by the state legislature, this is a problem. It looks like computing (in general) is to become one of those priority items in competition for remaining funds, after we downsize, rightsize, restructure, layoff, etc. Oh well! It's beginning to look like academia is falling prey to some of the same forces the business community has already dealt with and continues to deal with... Please excuse any editorial implications above... Sam Fairchild =============
