GUATEMALA: RADIO JOURNALIST ASSASSINATED The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has condemned the assassination of yet another journalist in Guatemala. Victor Hugo Lopez Escobar, director of the radio news program "Nuevo Diario del Aire" on Radio Progreso, was gunned down on 12 September 1994 by unidentified assailants as he emerged from his car in downtown Guatemala City. Guatemalan President Ramiro de Leon Carpio has ordered an investigation into the murder. Three newsmen have been killed in the past eleven months. Victor Manuel Cruz de la Cruz was murdered last December in Guatemala City. Marquense Munoz Barrios was killed in February 1994 in San Marcos. Lopez Escobar's death is the fourteenth the journalists killed in Latin America since December. IAPA notes that incidents such as these have tainted Guatemala's recent press freedom record. ** ** ** This is from: The IFEX Communique is published weekly by the IFEX Clearing House, Toronto.
