I always begin by having my class ftp to local campus systems. This way
I'm not tying up resources at a remote site. Students learn the same
thing from doing an FTP to one of our campus systems as they do using a
remote system about the mechanics of ftp. Then at the end of the session
we have a lab period where each student practices doing an ftp to a site
of their choice from a list I provide them. Usually people select a
variety of sites so everyone is not using the same site at the same time.
Teaching classes at night is not an option for me. Each session has a
maximum of six people in it so I don't think we are an undue burden on
any site. I ftp common internet documents that I think a lot of staff
would be interested in and keep a copy on my local system. I advise all
staff to check first on our local system before they do an ftp for a
document, we may already have it. I have found that most of our staff
are not ftping just for fun but to get a specific document. They are
delighted if I already have the document and can save them the trouble
of getting it themselves.
