Hi - Is there a way to use ShellExecute() to launch an URL *without* having it open in IE first?. ShellExecute(NULL, "open", "http://www.myflight.com:18009/122.95?action=join1",0,0,SW_SHOWNORMAL); Thanx, Vic Baron -- Vic Baron I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on disk somewhere!

ShellExecute() is not dependant on IE specifically. The code you have will cause the *default* browser currently registered on the machine to execute the URL, whether that browser is IE or Netscape or Opera or whatever. Now, with that said, what exactly are you looking for? Please clearify. It sounds like maybe you want to submit the URL without using a browser at all? If so, then you need to use an actual HTTP component instead of ShellExecute(). Indy (http://www.nevrona.com/indy) and ICS (http://www.overbyte.be) both have HTTP components, and there are many other third party components available for download if you search around a bit. Or else use the native TCP components to implement the HTTP protocol manually, if you want. The basics of the HTTP protocol are documented in RFC 1945 and 2616. Gambit

Another option is to use the InternetOpen(), HttpOpenRequest(), and HttpSendRequest() functions of the WinInet API. Gambit

Hi Gambit - My problem is twofold - you are correct, I need to launch the URL without opening a browser. My main problem is that I'm having to use MSVC++ 6.0 to do this and I am COMPLETELY unfamiliar with that product. Using BCB, I've used INDY's http components but I'm at loss with MS. I tried to convert the MSVC project to BCB but was unable to get it to work. I'll dig thru the MS documentation and see if they have a component that will do the trick. Thanx! Unless you write a DLL or COM object or something like that which is written in BCB and then used in VC++. > I'll dig thru the MS documentation and see if they have a > component that will do the trick. Not a component persay, because VC++ doesn't use components like BCB does. However, I did already point you to a few API functions which are callable from VC++ as well as BCB. Otherwise, just create a socket using the WinSock API directly and then send RFC-complient data over it, basically implementing HTTP manually. Gambit
