Identifying registered appications

Hi,
what is the best way to identify registered applications on a PC ?

I like to start Acrobat Reader and MS Word from my program, so I need to
know whether it is installaed, and , if yes, where the application is
located.

In the registry I found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes keys for all
registered file types (like ".doc", ".pdf" etc.) but these links don't
contain the path name of the application, and it seems, the format of this
entries differs between the windows
versions.
What is the easiest way to solve this ?

Thanks for the help !
Matthias

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes DOES INDEED point to the application
path,
in two steps:

The default value for .pdf for instance is "AcroExch.Document".

Then look up the default value for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Document\shell\open\command

This is the path to Acrobat Reader.

Thanks,
this is what I thought, but what is bothering me is, that on one of my PC's
(with Win2k) the ".pdf" key is empty,

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

and the "AcroExch.Document" key is called "AcroExch.Dokument" (german
version) and has no "shell/open" key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument]
@="Adobe Acrobat-Dokument"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\CLSID]
@="{B801CA65-A1FC-11D0-85AD-444553540000}"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\Insertable]
@=""
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\protocol]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\protocol\StdFileEditi
ng]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\protocol\StdFileEditi
ng\server]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Adobe\\ACROBA~1.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\protocol\StdFileEditi
ng\verb]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Dokument\protocol\StdFileEditi
ng\verb\0]
@="&Edit"

but nevertheless I can sucessfully open pdf-files with a double click. So
there must be something more than this 2-step procedure that you described
...
Any idea ?

Thanks in advance !
Matthias
