Hi Bob, In .NET, language is more of a personal preference than a matter of capabilities. Each language can use the .NET Framework Class Libraries and can be used to build all types of applications - ASP.NET, Windows Forms, etc. All the .NET languages run on the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and have all the benefits of managed code - Memory Management, Garbage Collection, Security, Exception Management, and more. My personal preference is C# because my background is heavy in C, C++, and Java software development. Although a person could use Notepad to develop .NET applications, there are various development environments available that help you be more productive. The choice in tool could make a difference in the direction you go. Tools differ in features, so you'll need to find out what their capabilities are and what matters to you the most. Another consideration is your motivation for moving to .NET. If you are trying to upgrade your skills and want to make yourself more marketable, your choice may be affected by the availability of employment with a certain technology. If you go to any of the main Job boards, such as Dice, Monsert, or HotJobs, and do a search on various languages, you can get an idea of what employers are looking for.
