Open Item: You post against an invoice -- say -- instead of an account
balance. When the set of transactions that belong to an invoice are
balanced -- you can close the transaction set for the order, invoice,
packing list etc..

Balance forward would work against the entire customer account -- like a
credit card. Payments are applied against the outstanding _account_
balance -- not an invoice.

Generally open item is the way to go.

I have seen systems that create open item invoices -- but then post
payments balance forward. The resulting chaos was not funny. Customers
were cut off due to non-payment of invoices etc... People thought there
was a massive A/R to show the bank etc. (to support a big operating line
of credit).

If you don't know this stuff you better get an accountant to help.

These are not SQL questions btw. :-)

Many manufacturing systems do not maintain integrity at the order level
either -- stuff disappears into a "cloud" at the factory, and then parts
are tagged as belonging to an order when the _apparently_ correct stuff
appears at the output.

So maybe your question is easy -- maybe not.
