HELP animated icons causing problems with paint method

When I have an animated icon running in my app. it appears to call the paint
method every time it updates.  This is understandable, but even after the
animated icon is replaced by a non animated icon the paint method is still
being called.  This only happens after an animated icon was displayed at
least once.
Any ideas on how to get it to stop calling the paint method after it is no
longer visible?
