The California Desert Protection Act, Senate bill S.21, has reached the subcommittee on Public Lands, National Parks and Forests. They will hear administration and expert witness testimony regarding the desert bill. Dirt bikers and other opponents of the bill are flooding the committee with petitions and form letters--proponents of the bill need to counter with good personal letters. If you choose to write to the committee, please emphasize the following points: -ask the committee to support and move S.21 intact to the Senate floor (no changes). -if you are familiar with specific wilderness study areas, describe why you want these areas protected. Some of the proposed areas include the Kelso dunes, the Old Woman mountains, the Mecca Hills, the Inyo Mountains. Support for specific areas will prevent their loss during mark-up of the bill. -Include the Saline Valley to the east of Death Valley National Monument into the proposed Death Valley National Park. -Support the proposed East Mojave National Park. -Demand that hunting not be allowed in any of the proposed national parks or wilderness areas. Establishing hunting in a national park would establish a dangerous precedent for all national parks. Letters should be addressed to: Senator Dale Bumpers Chairman, Subcommittee on Public Lands, National Parks and Forests 308 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 This bill is at a critical juncture, the hearings will be conducted on April 29 and 30, so speed is essential. Mark Webster "God put it there for us to mine," -quote from S.21 opponent at hearings at Palm Desert.
