Seems Dish are dumping AMC so I am considering throwing out ATT dish and just streaming everything. Don't really care to sign up for tv it's just the bandwidth I am after and hopefully no caps. I thought there was someone that worked for RCN who could give me a heads up on how good the service is in Chicago. The other consideration is CLEAR. any one? Hp

We watch the Killing and she watches Mad Men. sounds like the typical negotiation crap between the content and the distributors. lots of these kinds of disputes lately

AMC is suing Dish for a whole lot of money for something called VOOM. You'll have to google for the details. Dish has appealed the suit to various levels and it's not looking good for them, and the suit is going to proceed. This is their way of saying drop the suit/settle or we're taking our marbles and going home. They're trying to convey that this is another price increase they're stamping out, but that's not really true. -- Coming to you from the beautiful Chicago suburbs

Dish carried it only between 2005 and 2008. EchoStar/Dish paid $3.25 per month per HD subscriber receiving Voom. Cablevision was the only other distributor of Voom. I don't see how Dish can drag this out in court for so long, but I'm not a lawyer. Seems like a blatant breach of contract.

Ok, that's a point. $3.25 per month per subscriber had damn well better buy a lot of valuable entertainment. That's something like fees paid to HBO or Showtime at the time, if not more.

How the fuck wouldn't a 15-year deal like this have riders like "Voom will provide at least 30 hours of new, original content per month" or "if aggregate viewing ratings fall below X for Voom content, the price dumps"... Anyways, it's shit like this that makes me wish upon cable what has already happened to the music and bookstore industries. -- smr

I'm sure the history is on a Wiki somewhere but Voom was a premier service when it started, all the channels that made it up were hi-def, which from what I remember, was it's only claim to fame. They didn't last long, probably just too early in the digital/HD game. I think they went off the air for a bit and returned with a lot less channels and less programming. That's probably when Cablevision and Dish started (else took them over). It just seems stupid Dish would of done a 15 year deal. It's like someone in the 60's doing a 15 year deal with NBC because they were broadcasting in color prime time. I guess they took the bet that hi-def was going to be limited to tv geeks or something. -bruce bje@ripco.com
