Had to go to Microcenter today to pick up a power supply so, since I
haven't been there in awhile I perused a bit. I needed a Sata power
adapter cable and went to the cable section. It was funny. From left
to right the cable prices kept going down -- from $14.99 to $2.99. I
jumped at the $2.99 find for something that should be had for a quarter.
But what the hell, sometimes you have to pay for convenience and pity
the poor fool who ended up paying $14.99 for one of these.

When checking out apparently some salesguy put his ups sticker on there
so he or she got credit for that sale. Pretty clever. I would really
hate to work for a retailer who kept metrics like that.

Yeah, is sort of annoying because even when you find and pick the item
yourself, if one of the sales people see you carrying it, they'll slap a
sticker on it.

Last winter I went there with the kid for something and was waiting around
the pickup counter up front and asked the manager about it, she said the
main problem to solve was the floor people going missing. They were supposed
to have whatever it was, 10-15 people on the floor but customers were
wandering around looking for assistance.

The stickers show they were alive during their shift, didn't say anything
about a commission but I suppose there is one too.

I understand your comments about the sata adapter price spread. The same
goes with the brackets for flat screens. Melissa wanted a set in her office,
wall mounted and they had one of those Sony Google TV ones for $279 (the 24"
one).

There must of been eight different brackets for it (100mm vesa), and that
was just the stationary ones. The swivel/tilt ones probably had another 10
to choose from. The stationary ones, $4.99 to like $45, and I really don't
know why. All of them seemed to have the same two peices of bent metal with
an assortment of chinese screws that have heads on them that will sheer off
if tightend too much.

At least it's a choice I guess.

p.s. I see why Logitech and Sony bailed out of the Google tv market now,
that thing is just pathetic. It's about on par with the Boxee Box but both
are really a disappointment.

It's supposed to get the Honeycomb update at the end of the month.
There are Google TV apps showing up in the market.

And you can hack it to run Honeycomb if you don't want to wait.

I shop at the Microcenter in Westmont. In my experience they ask before
they put a sticker on your item, when I've asked them for help finding
something or a question about something.

Microcenter is my go-to place for anything computer. They are close, they
usually have whatever I need, usually a reasonable price, a decent return
policy if you're item didn't work or wasn't correct, and plenty of people
that can help me if I have any questions (unless you broke the clip on your
MB battery).

I notice I seldom hear anyone refer to Fry's anymore.

I haven't been there yet but checked them out online. The prices on
some of their bundled build your own packages are better than
Microcenter (Microcenter doesn't offer bundles) but their regular PCs,
laptops and desktops are more expensive. Microcenter has a lot of sub
$300 laptops now and they're getting better and better. I bought a
laptop used in the late 90s for $1000.

Tigerdirect is also located too close to the Fullerton/Damen/Elston
intersection and I'm always afraid of getting stuck in their parking
lot. I only needed a power supply and Microcenter had one for $12.

through and turn north back toward microcenter.

It was supposed to get that update 3 or 4 times already this past year.

No joke, if you look at the forums for Boxee and Google TV, one would be
hard pressed to figure out which one is which. Both companies over promised
and under delivered.

It's unclear to me what Google is going to do, unless they have plans with
the Motorola buyout, if Logitech and Sony bailed on making the product,
besides the ones out there already, doesn't seem to have much of a future.

Yeah but do you get anything from Fry's?

I was thinking about this when Melissa wanted the tv, we've bought stuff
from Fry's before but get nothing in advertising from them at all. One thing
Microcenter does well is plastering their warez, daily emails, specials, the
monthly paper/flyer thing.

I mean, I was ready to pick up a set from Costco, being "last years" model
would of worked fine for what she wanted when the email came about the Sony
tv with Google blowout sale from Microcenter.

I didn't even think of Fry's.

It looks like another big box store is opening in the area, hhgregs I guess.

With Best Buy sort of struggling a while, seems odd someone thought a new
group of stores would work, think it said they are opening 15 of them here.

I mention that because that appliance store that open up next door to MC on
Elston is gone, don't even remember the name of it. Think it was there for
two years, kind of surprising it lasted that long.

I live closer to Fry's than most of you, but I haven't been there in over
a year. I don't find their prices all that good on complete computers and
bigger ticket items, but they do have some of the most obscure computer
and electronics parts in the area. It's also hit and miss on some things,
and I leave there empty handed most times.

There's a Best Buy about a half mile north of the Fry's location. That's
one of the better BB locations in the area, and features their musical
instrument store.

My mom got a couple appliances from Grants a several years ago, and they
treated her well. When I was shopping for a refrigerator, they went
between ignoring us and smothering us at different stores.

ABT was wierd. We went on a Sunday, and the place is clearly a
destination, and was crowded. In the refrigerator section the customers
were wierd. They'd stand in front of a unit and block your access to it
like they were buying THAT VERY refrigerator. Sales people were really
busy. Next time I need an appliance I will go back there perhaps on a
week night. We ended up with a nice refrigerator that was really cheap
from Menards. My friend told me ABT would meet the Menard's price and
have free delivery. I will check that out next time.

I highly doubt anything official has ever come from google with a date.
They pretty much never release dates until like a week prior. You were
likely reading rampant speculation.

they're from indy, I've seen them around other cities. goog sez they opened
those 15 today. Closest ones to north side are by HIP and Village Crossing
(maybe where Grant's was?)

The one on Touhy is in the old Circuit City building. I've been past
it, but haven't bothered to wander in. The parking lot hasn't exactly
been swamped.

I used to shop at Fry's in Palo Alto when I was at school, the "fry's" here
is a zarking pile of shit in comparison, most of the people in it know
little about breathing let alone technology, they are all epsilon b semi
morons and should be the first against the wall when the robots take over.
Scum and filth to a man...

They must have had a soft opening. There was a sign on the building

Still have to wait for Sony to throw in the towel.

Android apologist.

They will, they already dropped one model and price cut the others to dump
inventory, not likely is going to be around into the 2012 models.

The one year wait for the Honeycomb wasn't worth it, my Sony got it a couple
weeks ago and in several repects, works worse than whatever was in there to
begin with.

Think I'll stick with my overpriced Apple fanboi products, at least they work
as advertised and aren't treated as an unwanted stepchild.

Heh. I think they're still the largest PC peripherals company going. I
prefer Microsoft's input devices, though.

Though my Das Keyboard rules over all.

I use their keyboards, seem to be the only one making a backlighted one that
isn't a peice of shit as for being a keyboard.

Kind of nigger, I'll admit that, but comes in handy at 3:30 in the morning
with low light levels.

But they do make a lot of accessories, computer cameras were a big ticket
for them, what the hell was that called, pointcast or something, before
video on the web took off, there was some system that used "reflectors".

Their cams were usually on the top of the list for compatable hardware.

Mirosoft mice have always been pretty much the best you can get, even
going back to weird stuff like their "inport" mouse card.

I don't think there's a single logitech thing in any of my time capsule
junk boxes.

Bruce, do you have any Mouse Systems optical mice that need the mouse pad
with the grid printed on them, like old sun or SGI stuff?

Damn.

If I still had the junk pile at Clybourn, I'd be saying "how many you want".

We had a shoe box full of those along with a few pads.

But honestly, I'm not sure if I took them, some of them or tossed them all.

I can poke around and see but really don't remember their fate.
