Is it possible to make an image file (ghost, etc..) of an NT 4.0 workstation. We currently do this for win95 computers as a quick fix in the event that the hard drive crashes. However I have not been able to successfully use "ghost" on NT 4.0 workstation to make an image file of the hard drive. Any ideas? Once again the purpose is to have an image to restore from in the event of a HD crash. cshaw1@san.rr.com

I have had success in doing so using Powerquest's Drive Image but there seems to be a trick ... <soapbox out> You need a DOS partition, i.e. multi-boot. <soapbox put away> What I do is restore the WS partition and then restore the DOS partition - just restoring the WS partition fails. Now, I must emphasis that this is not after a HD crash. If and when my HD crashes then I'll try it again and let you know if it works on a *different* HD. I have heard that there are "SID" programs that will also correct this problem and perhaps someone can offer information on this as I have heard little else. I'm certain there are other ways (involving a rescue disk et al) too but as the above works for me, I haven't spent time investigating further.

Look for the link to "Disk Image Copying of Microsoft Operating Systems." I've not tried it myself, but this is supposed to be MS's response to the demand for NT Workstation cloning.

Although the SID factor does come into play, if you are using it for the reason you specify (restoring after a hard drive crash), this shouldn't be an issue, as the original machine that had the SID is gone at that point. I should note that the latest release of Ghost also comes with a separate utility to change SIDs. We have used this successfully on several PCs now. Also, just as a direct answer to the later part of your question, yes, we are able to successfully clone NT 4 hard drives (FAT or NTFS) without problems. -- Kathy Leeman kleeman@NOJUNKMAILhqmail.unipac.com To reply, remove "NOJUNKMAIL" from my address. We use a program called InstallMate which seems to work quite well. their latest version takes care of that infamous SID problem. From what I also hear Ghost takes care of that problem as well. I'd say your best bet is to try copying the machine and go from there. What's the worst thing that could happen? It doesn't work? Just make sure that you take the machine you are duplicating off the net when the other one comes on line or else you'll have that problem of two machines on the net with the same name. Good luck, let me know what happens! If the latter, surely you can boot the machine, change domain, delete and re-add the machine using Domain Server Manager, and then rejoin the domain. Ghost works fine and if you ghost a w\s at the right time there is no SID problem as long as you are authenticating to domain's not workgroups. If you install NT and all the apps you wan't on the workstation and either don't add it to the domain to do this, or remove from the domain at this point, all should be fine. The local SID is generated as the machine joins the domain, so cloning at this point resolves the SID issue. The only problem's I have incurred are making a working 95 boot disk but that's a different story! If you use Imagecast but want to format to NTFS, you will have the problem of SID but can use a freeware program called NewSid to change them. I suspect the same will hold true for Ghost. Use newsid with caution as it realy burned me here. It seems to work fine on freshly cloned machines, but when applied to machines with existing accounts, the registry entries for the existing profiles were corrupted, forcing me to re-create the accounts on the machines.
