1.How do you run Visual Java generated applets with Netscape?

There are several ways Netscape users can run Visual Java generated applets.

1.If the runtime classes in $JWS/classes/sunsoft/jws/visual/rt are accessible
locally, a user can add the Visual Java runtime path to their CLASSPATH and
then start Netscape. Netscape searches the CLASSPATH when loading classes.

2.If a Netscape user is running a VJ generated applet over the internet and
doesn't have a copy of the VJ runtime classes locally, the runtime class tree
must be under the CODEBASE specified in the applet tag. This means if you
generate an applet with VJ and want users on the net to be able to run it in
Netscape you have to make sure the runtime class tree is under the directory
containing the html page containing the applet tag.

This situation is primarily a limitation of the current applet tag, which
does not provide a way to tell the class loader to look for class files in
multiple locations. What is really needed is either a way to specify multiple
CODEBASE attributes or a classpath in the applet tag.

2.Will applets developed with Visual Java require co-distribution of all
.class files in JWS/classes/sunsoft/jws/visual/rt? (about 375K)

The answer is that, yes, you must redistribute the classes that you need out
of the visual/rt directory. And we do permit such redistribution.

We will be working with as many vendors as we can, I assume, to make sure
that those classes either become redundant (because AWT buys them back), or
we bundle with the OS vendors.

3.How do you add menus to GUIs?

We shipped Dev 5 with instructions to select the frame, bring up the
attributes editor, and click on the Menu Editor. It's no longer there. The
problem is that the menu editor still exists, but the application type is set
to "panel" instead of "frame".

If you want to use a menu, you can delete the initial layout window, and then
select the "Window->New Frame" menu item to create a frame window.

Alternatively, you can use the "Window->Main Container..." menu item to
change the type for the initial window from "panel" to "frame". This
technique should be used if there is already stuff in the window that you
don't want to lose.

(Lengthy explanation)
The problem is caused by the fact that the default group type used to be
"frame", but was changed to be "panel". The reason for this is that to create
an applet that resides inside an html page, the group's type must be set to
"panel". If the group's type is set to "frame", then it can still be an
applet, but cannot be put directly inside an html page but must exist as a
separate window. This change was prompted by some email from Sun suggesting
that the majority of customers would initially want to create applets that
reside inside the html page. Therefore the default was changed from "frame"
to "panel".

The type of the group is reflected in the title bar of the layout window. If
the title says "PANEL", then what you are editing is actually a panel, not a
frame. And since panels cannot have menus, there is no menu editor.

4.When starting Visual Java from portfolio manager for an existing project by
selecting the project and then click the visual ICON there is no data.

When you create a project and specify Visual Java to create the project, it
automatically creates <projectname>.gui as the data file. Whenever you save
your Visual Java information, <projectname>.gui is updated. When you select
Visual Java, it automatically opens <projectname>.gui, based on the current
project. If you used "Save as" to save your data in a filename other than
<projectname>.gui, you will need to use Open to load your data. Dev6 will
contain better integration of Visual Java with projects.
