Performa woes

I hope someone noticed that I had been gone for awhile. Here's the
scoop:

A few weeks ago Tom upgraded my Performa from 8 megs to 20. I was a
very grateful camper. A few days later, while working on a big project
with a lot of graphics, my Performa crashed. When I would try to start
up again, the smiley face would come on and stick there. Nothing else
could access the Performa-Startup CD, Zip Drive, hard drives. Tom was
on vacation...Tom should not be allowed to go on vacations. So I went
to Fry's and bought a new hard drive. It wouldn't fit or work. Found
out there is a type of Drive called a differential drive. It can't be
the ID or last drive in the daisy chain. So, I went back and to
exchange it. I went through about 5 drives and a 45 minute wait
before I got one that would work. Tom put it in and it does work fine,
but we can't access my original Apple Drive. The Apple Drive is an AT
ID drive, not a Scuzzy drive, so we couldn't use anything like scummy
Probe to work on it. Now I am trying to find a guy who can work on
drives. CompUSA can't do it. Anyone know where Rick Schultz is in CO?

I haven't gotten any response to my queries at Biola. You pick lousy times
to need help, Bob! I haven't been able to access my Biola e-mail today to
see if any answers have come in. I'll let you know if I do hear anything.

I checked around at work, and nobody has any experience with Apple IDE
drives. Beats the bejezus outta me.

This is so weird Tom. Nobody I have talked to even knew that these
drives were being used. I don't get it. Tina has given me a lead at
Biola, but I'm worried that they won't know about it either. Very
strange indeed. But, keep looking and let me know if you find anyone
who knows anything about this. I'd sure like to get one file off of
there.

I knew that the internals were IDE. It is the same type drive they use in
the IBMs. I think they wanted to save money.

In one way it is a good thing. I got a 2.5 gig drive for less than
$400.00. You can't get mac drives as cheaply as the IBM drives. But
the data recovery problems look to be very challenging to me. Now,
what I don't understand is that before the crash, Nortons did see the
drive and could work on it. So could Scsi Probe. But after the crash,
even though the drive still could begin a start up process, nothing
could see it in the scsi chain. So, I don't understand that and why I
can't find some utility that can see it. Obviously, every Performa
user has this potential problem. Someone must have run into it before
me, so there should be some history to the situation and a solution
out there as well.
