The FSF has in the past been distributing version 2.1 of the screen
program, which provides virtual ASCII terminal screens. Version 3.2a
of screen is now available for anonymous ftp from
prep.ai.mit.edu [18.71.0.38], in the file pub/gnu/screen-3.2a.tar.Z.

On 5 June 1992 in comp.unix.bsd, Oliver Laumann
(the original author of screen) wrote:

I no longer maintain screen 2.1. iscreen 3.2 is considered the
    `official' version of screen.

3.2a is 3.2 with changes by djm@gnu.ai.mit.edu (David MacKenzie)
("unofficial" in the sense that Juergen didn't respond to my mail
asking if he wanted to merge them into his code):

Configuration:

Use the standard GNU automatic configuration system, file names,
  and Makefile targets.

Reorganize config.h into two sections: one for site-dependent policy
decisions, and one for O.S.-dependent features.

Centralize where the pathname of the global screenrc is defined.
It's now defined in just one place, Makefile.in.

Portability:

Move load average code into a 4.4BSD-compatible subroutine and support
  more systems.

Fix AIX pty allocation and tty reopening (mycroft@gnu.ai.mit.edu).

screen didn't compile if UTMPOK wasn't defined, because stripdev
didn't get compiled in, but screen.c used it unconditionally.

Define NSIG if SVR4 doesn't (Okix).

  Make strdup agreeable to HPUX.

Documentation:

Clean up duplication of multiple README etc. files.

Fix some errors and omissions in screen.1.

  Change crazy defaults in etcscreenrc.
