Is there a name for the method of compressing video signals where the distance
before a certain amount of brightness change is stored, instead of the
brightness at regular points? And, any books/papers/etc about it, especially
relating to astronomical pictures.

Thanks for any help,
Mark Aitchison, University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
