One approach to your problem is known as packet radio, which is exactly
what you need -- digital data via radio.
You can find information on the hobby side of packet radio in
rec.radio.amateur.packet.
Several manufacturers make complete turn-key packet systems -- connect the
RS-232 cables and treat the "box" as an external modem, only the data is
transmitted by radio, not telephone.
I recommend this manufacturer:
PacComm Packet Radio systems, Inc.
4413 N. Hesperides St.
Tampa, FL 33614-7618
Voice: 813-874-2980
FAX: 813-872-8696
BBS: 813-874-3078
Internet: 76576.2003@compuserve.com
As I recall, PacComm's commercial units can respond to the "Hayes
Standard" AT Command Set, just like a modem. This should help simplify
your project.
Good luck!
