This is easy....Telnet to a port on a given machine and it will report back Wingate>. At this point you can actually telnet out and create all kinds of havoc on an irc channel. Why would someone do this you ask? Well it looks as if though the attack came from that machine. There are actually easier ways to find a wingate machine. You can right the correct script files and query given ports...(21,80,23.....) Another way to find Wingate machines would be to download a Wingate scanner which can look at an entire subnet in about 10-12 minutes depending on the time out value you set for it. Wingate is not actually a "bad" program if it is setup correctly. By disabling telnet and ftp capabilites you shouldn't have much trouble with security. It might also help to close smtp. A lot of people use Wingate "right out of the box" without configuring it correctly and thats were the problems start. Wingate on a cable modem is great because it allows a "wannabe" to create ping floods with great speed due to the large bandwith of the modem. These are just things that I have heard of course. This has become a large problems with the likes of Efnet and other irc operators.
