TO ALL WHO USE BROADBAND ROUTERS...

I bought the Linksys Broadband router because it had a built in switch and
seemed like the best value. I haven't had any connection problems with it
yet so technically I chose the right one right?.... WRONG. One of the
biggest reasons I bought this router was so that I could hook up multiple
pc's on my lan to a game of Quake 3 all on the same internet server. But it
won't let me! Only one computer can get through and the others can't even
PING the server or have it come up on the server list.

I can connect multiple pc's each on a different quake 3 server just fine. I
can even connect 2 instances of Quake 3 games (windowed) on 1 pc into 1
internet server (weird huh?). So why can't multiple pc's get on 1 server???
I have tried for weeks to get this working and finally gave up and so the
only way for my lan to play vs the internet is to setup a server of my own
on the lan.

I'm now thinking about trying the Netgear RT311 router. Does anyone have
any experience with this with Quake 3??? Can you please tell me if this
router (or any others) will allow my lan to connect to 1 internet server??

BTW, Before I got the router, I was running SyGate on my main pc to share
the cable modem. This worked great w/ quake 3 even! So there has to be a
way.
I wrote Linksys' useless tech support and the reply i got was: "It will not
work with this game"

That's it! Please help.

Thanks

So..... what exactly does this have to do with overclocking? Don't you just
hate out of topic cross posting?

I would buy one myself and try it, but I don't want to be stuck w/ the
hassle of trying to return a product bought online. Does anyone know any
local stores that sell this router?? I saw one post that a guy got it
working w/ the D-Link router, but that one only has 1 port for the LAN and
only at 10mbps (I think).

I work at Best Buy and we just got some Linksys routers in but still no
Netgear.

Uunreal Tournament works wonderfully from multiple machines through to LAN
on this router. So you must be out of luck, you stupid quake-head.

MaDHatter, you are truly one dim crost-posting little twit. WTF does this
have to do with overclocking??!

I have a Netopia R9100 router with Roadrunner cable. The hub built into the
Netopia is a 10BaseT which works fine for internet access but I uplinked the
router to a Netgear 100BaseTX switch. This gives REALLY good speeds across the 5
user network I have for file transfers and printing. All machine can play online
games on different internet servers at once. If the server is fast the game is
fast. If the server is laggy then the game will be too. A router with a fat pipe
is livin large.

No direct experience; however, my son likes to "host" Starcraft games.
Originally, I had the Linksys and I now have the Netgear RT311. From what
I can tell, both routers only have the option to place one machine
"outside" of the firewall. The Netgear appears to have more configeration
options than the Linksys. I'd email Netgear and tell them you'll buy
their product if they can explain to you how to set it up as per your
needs.

Try using Net Address Translation. If you have an NT box, it's built in
as "IP forwarding". If you have a Linux box, they call it IP masquerading.
If you have W95, there's a tool I use called NAT32. I've used it to
play Q2 with both my computers on the same server using one modem. That
is not really practical but with broadband you should have no problem.
I only have experience with nat32 though, so YMMV. Try www.nat32.com

The config file that the cable co has sent to your modem is limiting you to
one MAC connected to the modem. Either run a proxy or call your cable co.

Nat32 is the best one i've used, It's is the ONLY nat program that
allows you to share internet connection on a one way cable modem.

The Netgear website states "There are well-known incompatibilities
between NAT
and certain onlines games and videoconferencing applications" in the FAQ
area.
This limits you to one machine behind the router (if any at all work)
that can
play the game at a time (after making configuration changes). I believe
this is
a result of using NAT and the game site requiring specific ports on each
system.

Sorry, but I believe that ANY router that uses NAT will have the same
problem.

Bob

Bob is correct about multiple instances of client applications which require
the use of specific port numbers. Your NAT router has one IP, and hence only
on Port Number X on that IP.

However, as MaD HaTTeR insightfully notes, Quake allows him to open a second
game window on a machine behind the NAT router which is already running one
instance of Quake. This is because:

When selecting a port, Q2 will choose one based on the role of the
machine. However, this can be overridden by user commands. Also, if
there are two clients on the same machine, then the second client will
have a port assigned to it by the OS because the default is being used
   by the first client.
                        Role Port Number
                       ------ -------------
                       Client 27901
                       Server 27910
                       Master 27900

[Note: The above information comes from Darrin Cullop's Quake Technical Web
page at http://www.optics.arizona.edu/Pandora/q2/connect.asp ]

I have never played with Quake, but I am aware that, because it is a common
and highly popular game, many NAT routers come with Quake port mappings
already set up.

MaD HaTTeR may be able to work around his problem of multiple machines by
conguring the Quake clients on Machine 2 and 3 for alternate ports and then
adding the appropriate port mappings to his NAT router software.

Please note that I am *NOT* a Quake player and just researched this because
of an interest in NAT applications. Although Darrin Cullop states that
Quake's default port assignments "can be overridden by user commands", I'll
have to leave it up to the Quake players to figure out how to do this and
how to set up their specific NAT router port mappings accordingly.

Please don't ask me any questions: this is all I know about this subject.

Cheers,
The Old Bear

I know you can play quake over NAT because I have done it. At first it
didn't work, but the machine running the NAT is just a linux box. After I
set up port forwarding, where it send out over a specific port when coming
from a certain machine and another port for another machine, it worked fine.

Hi,

Before I bought the router I was using a dedicated pc running SYGATE
(NAT). If Sygate can connect multiple clients to 1 server then it is not
IMPOSSIBLE for a router's NAT solution to do the same. Also what I've been
able to do is put that dedicated pc outside of the firewall as the dmz host
and have other pc's use the sygate machine as the gateway instead of the
router. This also allows the pc's to use the same server.

Actually you can do this with a Linksys Router.. I know because I have
17 people at my appartment in the same Quake 3 server using my Linksys
Router... Create a .bat file to execute the game. In the bat file
include a differn't net port for each computer.. Hence each computer
must go through a differnt net port while starting up the game.. Put
this batch file in your QuakeIIIArena Directory.

The only line needed in the batch file is...: (Copied out of mine)

quake3.exe +set net_port 27660 +set sv_pure 0

Dont forget!!! Make a bat file for every PC that you wish to connect
with, and give it a unique net port. example- 27660, 27661, 27662 so
on so forth.. Works for me!! Our clan does it every day..

Hope this helps.

SORRY FOR CAPS BUT YES I AM SCREAMING.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

You are the first person to post a reply that actually makes sense. I
haven't tried this yet but I appreciate the effor nonetheless.

I knew it involed the net port but after looking through websites with
console variables, the only value I could find was net_qport and net_qport
is always different no matter what so even when we set different values it
didn't work. going to try it now, i'll reply back how it goes. Thanks
again. Now I won't have to buy a $200 router that will let me do this.

Yup, that's what me and the UMGrrl did this evening. Set up the Linksys,
used the net_port option and we were zipping along, happily fraging on The
Lab together. . The router and switched hub are nice, make a nice little
package.

If you're batch impaired, right click on the Q3 icon and fill in the target
like so:

"C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set com_hunkmegs 96 +set
net_port 27660, incrementing the port number on each system as HeLLiON
said. By the way, I've got the 96 set cause I have 128 of ram.

Good luck with it... Also make sure that all the Pc's behind the
router are using the same cd_key.. You may have problems if the cd
keys are differnt because your joining the same server with the same
IP, but diff cd keys.. Ive noticed that some servers have a problem
with it, but others don't!! hehe. Oh well. Now If I can just figure
out how to run a Q3Server from behind the router Ill be set...

Happy to help guys... :)

I think I've tried forwarding port 27960 to my q3 server but i can't
remember if that worked or not. I just set the server as a dmz host
whenever i want to run one but i guess that wouldn't qualify as being behind
the firewall hehe.

It's not a Linksys option, it's a Quake III option that lets you
predetirmine the port each player uses when connecting to a
server----otherwise your packets collide through the NAT'ed address!
