Just a short question on Ghostscript fonts: Are the Courier (24courer) and Utopia (24utopia) fonts still the only "quality" fonts for Ghostscript or are there meanwhile others? (Any good Times-Roman font in sight?) Thanks for any hints, Stephan +------------------------------------------------+ | Stephan Petersen | | | | Bitnet/EARN: IFF291@DJUKFA11 | | Internet: IFF291@zam001.zam.kfa-juelich.de | +------------------------------------------------+

The Courier and Utopia fonts is donated to MIT X Consortium by IBM and Adobe. Is you have an IBM-RS6000 with AIX3.2, you find a collection of Adobe original Type1 fonts in the directory /usr/lpp/DPS/fonts/outlines. Modify the /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/Fontmap file to use these fonts. I don't think it is legal to make copies of these fonts, but since you already have paid a license for AIX, it should be legal to use them as-is. You can also get a big collection of fonts from ftp.cica.indiana.edu in the directory /pub/pc/win3/fonts/atm. You need an unzip program to extract the .pfb files from the .zip files located there. The last overview shows that there is 411 Public Domain Type1 PostScript fonts available, not all of them is of good quality, but enough for anyone to get a real font-orgasm.... -- Bjorn Brox, CORENA A/S, Baneveien 38, N-3600 Kongsberg, NORWAY E-mail : brox@corena.no, Phone : +47 3 73 66 11, Fax : +47 3 73 68 77

I've tried this with gs241 and AIX 3.1. It works for most fonts, but the Helvetica and Times-Roman families will not work, probably because they are Type4 fonts (?). Is there any way to convert the fonts to a usable format ? Are the fonts in AIX 3.2 different from those in AIX 3.1 ? -- Pim Zandbergen domain : pim@cti-software.nl CTI Software BV uucp : uunet!mcsun!sun4nl!ctisbv!pim Laan Copes van Cattenburch 70 phone : +31 70 3542302 2585 GD The Hague, The Netherlands fax : +31 70 3512837

If you decode the AIX3.1 Helvetica and Times-Roman fonts into readable ascii, you will see that they depends on some dicts and functions only available in some versions (?) of Display PostScript. The collection of DPS fonts you get with AIX3.2 does not have such dependencies. > >Is there any way to convert the fonts to a usable format ? No and yes, but it is not worth it - you need a really good knowledge about the internals of PostScript Type1 fonts. >Are the fonts in AIX 3.2 different from those in AIX 3.1 ? Yes, pluss some extra fonts: AGaramond-*, BrushScript, Hobo, and Stencil. -- Bjorn Brox, CORENA A/S, Baneveien 38, N-3600 Kongsberg, NORWAY E-mail : brox@corena.no, Phone : +47 3 73 66 11, Fax : +47 3 73 68 77

I hope you don't mind if I ask you some more questions... > >Is you have an IBM-RS6000 with AIX3.2, [...] Unfortunately not, I'm working under plain DOS... > >You can also get a big collection of fonts from ftp.cica.indiana.edu >in the directory /pub/pc/win3/fonts/atm. You need an unzip program >to extract the .pfb files from the .zip files located there. I'll try that. Is there anything special about the *.gsf format (as you can see from my questions, I'm not *that* experienced yet with PostScript fonts) or is any Type-1 font ready to go with GS? Anything special necessary to register the fonts for GS? I guess you'd have to edit the fontmap file, right? >The last overview shows that there is 411 Public Domain Type1 PostScript >fonts available, not all of them is of good quality, but enough for >anyone to get a real font-orgasm.... Wow, does this survey exist as a file or is it part of a FAQ or something like that? If so, I'd really like to get hold of it... Thanks for your help, Stephan P.S.: Just to let you know what I need this for: I'm preparing graphs for my Ph.D. thesis (with GLE, using LaTeX(emTeX)), and I'd like to have them in EPS- as well as PCX-format. But unless I find some better PS-fonts to go with GS (a good standard Times-Roman would already be enough), it's not that easy. The "TeX" fonts that come with GLE (texcmr etc.) don't turn out very nicely if you output from GLE to a bitmap directly. +------------------------------------------------+ | Stephan Petersen | | | | Bitnet/EARN: IFF291@DJUKFA11 | | Internet: IFF291@zam001.zam.kfa-juelich.de | +------------------------------------------------+
