I'm running Bind 8.1.2 and sendmail 8.9.1 on Linux and I seem to have a problem receiving non-spam emails! Emails that I receive that have a hostname after the "@", such as spam from iname.com are received fine. Emails from domains that are not hostnames, such as rrl.co.uk and madge.com, are rejected with the message: "Sender domain must exist". Querying DNS shows that the nameserver information is present but no information about MX records. E.g. paul@darwin> nslookup Default Server: localhost Address: 127.0.0.1 > set q=any > madge.com Server: localhost Address: 127.0.0.1 Non-authoritative answer: madge.com nameserver = NS0-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET madge.com nameserver = NS1-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET madge.com nameserver = NS.madge.com Authoritative answers can be found from: madge.com nameserver = NS0-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET madge.com nameserver = NS1-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET madge.com nameserver = NS.madge.com NS0-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET internet address = 158.43.129.77 NS1-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET internet address = 158.43.193.77 NS.madge.com internet address = 194.129.140.2 Any ideas? Paul

If you want to see MX records, use "set q=mx". I generally use the "host" command: pasilla:~#97% host madge.com madge.com mail is handled (pri=50) by inet.dev.madge.com madge.com mail is handled (pri=100) by fallback.mail.pipex.net pasilla:~#100% host rrl.co.uk rrl.co.uk mail is handled (pri=40) by relay2.mail.uk.psi.net rrl.co.uk mail is handled (pri=5) by mail.rrl.co.uk rrl.co.uk mail is handled (pri=20) by mx3.mail.uk.psi.net rrl.co.uk mail is handled (pri=40) by relay1.mail.uk.psi.net I don't know why your sendmail is complaining about these, as they look fine to me. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@bbnplanet.com GTE Internetworking, Powered by BBN, Cambridge, MA *** DON'T SEND TECHNICAL QUESTIONS DIRECTLY TO ME, post them to newsgroups.

It appears that if a hostname is being looked up then all is well. If it's a domain with MX records then sendmail appears to only accept the mail if the MX records are already in the local name server. Paul

My problem appears to be with the fact that I have "HasWildcardMX" set. When the reverse lookup is done, MX records are not used because there'll be a match against a domain in my search list (*.demon.co.uk). If I turn "HasWildcardMX" off, then all domains match" How might I find out if there is a wildcard MX record from the programming point of view? Paul
