WARNING Do not use LaCie's SilverLining software unless you fully intend to reformat the drive you select. This software will write to your SCSI drive without obtaining verification from you first. My particular situation was as follows. I have a 1080M drive partitioned and formatted under Win95 into 2 520M partitions. I mounted it on a Mac in order to burn a CD from one of the partitions. At one point we were moving things from drive to drive to prepare for the burn. We were considering reformatting my drive as an HFS volume, so we launched SilverLining. We decided against reformatting after we looked at the SilverLining drive configuration dialog. We cancelled out. When I attempted to remount my drive on either system, my partition information was gone. To reiterate: SilverLining wrote to my drive *before* I approved any action. I never moved into or beyond the format confirmation dialog. Be careful. This software is dangerous. -Jon

I have been using this version, and have not had any problems. If you need an update, there is a WWW site for LaCie....and suggest you get it, if you are so inclined. Cheers.

I have version 5.6.3, which is the very latest version, obtained by updater from LaCie's Web site. My problem with Silverlining has to do with Virtual Memory, which, in short, does not always work with Silverlining!! I have a Quantum 730, running on a PowerMac 6100, which I formatted into three equally sized Mac partitions.Immediately thereafter, I installed from virgin system floppies a clean 7.5.1 system onto one of the partitions. I then booted from this partition with the clean system. Then, I discovered the following: (keep in mind that the system is a super clean freshly installed version) - when VM is set to a LARGE value (in my case about 80 MB, the system reliably crashes after the last INIT or CDEV loads. In some cases, if VM is set to a lower value (RAM +1MB), VM might work or not, depending upon how many extensions are loaded!!! The system runs fine without VM I later tried the same experiment with System 7.1.2, and System 7.5 with the same results. Also, the results were the same when I formatted with an earlier version of Silverlining (5.6). La Cie Tech support claimed they were not aware of the problem in version 5.6, and referred me to their web site, where I obtained the update to 5.6.3, which has the same flaw. Why do I suspect Silverlining? I do NOT experience this problem when formatting and initializing with FWB Primer or SCSI Director!!! I have performed this experiment at least four times, and the result is the same each time - Silverlining prevents VM from running reliably each time, while FWB and SCSI Director allow it to operate normally. I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this problem. Again the pertinent data: Silverlining 5.6.3, PowerMac 6100/60, CLEAN System 7.1.2, 7.5, or 7.5.1, Quantum 730 drive, initialized into three partitions. Set VM to maximum allowed (minus 1 or 2 MB for safety). System crashes EVERY time after INITs and CDEVs load. Larry Knight -- The L2 Company (800) L2-PWR-PC (527-9772) Marietta, GA, USA

After SilverLining destroyed my disk I downloaded 5.6.3, but then of course it was too late. I subsequently spoke with LaCie tech support, who were at best incompetent and at worst flat out rude. They could offer me no help. They didn't know what their product had done to my drive; they suggested I wasn't supposed to be running that version on a Centris 650; and after a 40 minute runaround they admitted that this was a known bug in this version of the software. A known bug? A bug that destroys your HD? Nice work, LaCie. Good thing you alerted your users. Please, be extremely careful working with software produced by a company this irresponsible. They don't know what they're doing, and what they don't know can hurt you.
