Next Meeting
============
Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1:00pm

The next ESILUG meeting is being held at Mitretek Systems in
McLean, Virginia (see map and directions at the end of this newsletter).
The agenda is as follows:

* General Q&A

    This is your opportunity to exchange information about Windows NT,
    OpenVMS and server integration with your fellow professionals.

* Digital Responds

    Digital presents responses to the feedback received at the July
    ESILUG meeting. Come continue the dialogue with Digital!

* Performance War Stories

    Bring us your performance war stories and tell us how you solved
    them! Win prizes! The stories will be judged by the ESILUG Steering
    Committee on technical and artistic merit. (Are they informative?
    Are they funny?) You can let us know in advance if you'd like to
    participate by contacting Jim Becker (see ESILUG Steering Committee
    list below), or you can just show up ready to tell your tale.

* A Comparison of Windows NT and OpenVMS Performance

    This presentation focuses on the key performance aspect of these two
    operating systems. Because David Cutler has been the driving force
    behind both Digital's' OpenVMS and Microsoft's NT operating systems,
    one finds many similarities in their design and operational
    characteristics. With almost 20 years separating the introductions
    of VMS and NT however, there are differences. These differences can
    be accounted to the origins of each of the operating systems,
    maturity, and the evolution of software design practices. The
    presentation addresses CPU, memory, I/O, and process dynamics from a
    performance perspective. Attendees with a strong background in VMS
    will come away with an appreciation of NT's similarities to VMS.
    The presentation will be given by Karl Friedrich, Senior Technical
    Advisor and Open Systems Product Manager, Datametrics Corporation.
    Karl is a former Digital employee with many years of system
    performance experience.

The July ESILUG Meeting
=======================

The ESILUG met July 30 at the CNA Corporation in Alexandria, Virginia.
ESILUG thanks CNA for providing the facility and the refreshments.

Digital Listens

Bill Ryan (Digital) invited the attendees to complete and return the
surveys that were distributed with the July ESILUG newsletter. The
purpose of the survey was to determine why some organizations have not
yet migrated from VAX to Alpha. Bill handed out thank-you gifts to those
who turned in surveys.

Mary Leary (Digital) asked attendees for "three wishes" she could take
back to Digital. Attendees provided Mary with a variety of feedback. She
agreed to deliver a response back to the LUG.

Polycenter Overview and Update

Neil Nicoll (Digital) described where Digital and Computer Associates
are headed with the Polycenter family of products. A copy of his
presentation is available on the ESILUG Web page. Neil also referenced a
couple of pages on the CA Web site:
* http://www.cai.com/products/polyctr.htm
* http://www.cai.com/press/96june/9666nigel.htm

As indicated on their Web page, Computer Associates has stated their
commitment to OpenVMS and that the OpenVMS Polycenter products will
continue to be enhanced and supported. CA will create CA-Unicenter for
OpenVMS by integrating the Polycenter products and extending them with
CA-Unicenter capabilities, allowing management of OpenVMS from either
Windows NT or a Unix workstation. CA-Unicenter TNG will be extended to
support both OpenVMS and DECnet, providing enterprise management through
the CA-Unicenter TNG 3D interface.

Microsoft Exchange Server

Paul Rosenbaum (Digital) described the Digital/Microsoft open messaging
strategy. Jim Taylor (Advanced Paradigms) demonstrated Microsoft
Exchange.

Digital's objectives with its messaging strategy, as stated in its
various Affinity publications, are to help users bridge the gap between
diverse heterogeneous electronic mail systems and networks, to
facilitate introduction of new technology into multiplatform
environments using a three-tier client/server computing model, and to
offer a full suite of messaging solutions designed to give users choices
in desktops, servers, enterprise messaging backbones, and operating
systems.

Digital has introduced products and services that enable full
integration of Windows-based mail systems with enterprise mail
backbones. In particular, MAILbus 400 MTA V2.0 enables Microsoft
Exchange servers to operate in a heterogeneous enterprise mail
environment. It supports the Exchange file transfer bodypart, enabling
automatic conversion and exchange of mail messages between Exchange,
Digital's ALL-IN-1 and MailWorks, and other mail systems. X.500
Directory Services V3.0 implements a distributed network directory that
can support a worldwide population of mail users, and automates
synchronization with other directories. Digital's suite of X.400 and
X.500 messaging products will support the U.S. Department of Defense's
Defense Messaging System (DMS) requirements for secure messaging. DMS
support will encompass messaging products for OpenVMS, Windows NT and
other platforms, and will be available for military and commercial
users.

LUG News
========
ESILUG & DILUG

ESILUG and the Desktop Integration LUG (DILUG) have decided to hold two
joint meetings each year. We will also invite other LUGs in the region
to join us. At these joint meetings, we will present topics of broad
interest that should appeal to members of both groups. The chart below
shows the ESILUG meeting schedule through the end of 1997.

  Date            Meeting
  24 Sep 1996     ESILUG
  19 Nov 1996     ESILUG & DILUG
  28 Jan 1997     ESILUG
  25 Mar 1997     ESILUG
  29 Apr 1997     ESILUG & DILUG
  29 Jul 1997     ESILUG
  30 Sep 1997     ESILUG & DILUG
  18 Nov 1997     ESILUG

The next DILUG meeting was held September 12 at Digital's Greenbelt
offices. Jeff Forrest and Kurt Smith of Digital spoke about RAID
technology. Ed Herold (Digital) described and demonstrated FX!32, free
software from Digital that will run Intel-based code on an Alpha running
Windows NT.

DECUS '96/Anaheim
=================

The DECUS U.S Chapter Fall Event will be held from November 9-14, 1996,
in Anaheim, California. The deadline for DECUS hotel reservations is
October 18.

DECUS '96/Anaheim gives you the opportunity to gather with like-minded
peers and professionals who are moving in the same direction as you --
and who are confronting the same technology challenges along the
way. The sessions, seminars and multi vendor trade show are designed to
give you every chance to exchange information in open, dynamic and
interactive forums. You'll hear from industry experts, experienced
engineers and Digital Business Partners, all ready to answer your
questions with information at a technical enough level to be of real
value to you and your organization. The Anaheim agenda also features
case studies from peers at work out in the technology trenches. See the
DECUS Web page at www.decus.org for more information.

AltaVista Software
==================

Digital announced in May 1996 its entry into the Internet software
business with the introduction of a family of search products based on
its AltaVista technology. New AltaVista products were recently
announced. AltaVista Mail V1.0 for Windows NT supports Internet POP3
messaging clients and requires no special expertise to install and
administer. AltaVista Remote Manager provides realtime access to network
configurations and remote systems' hardware, software, and
configurations using the Internet. AltaVista Manager for Backoffice
extends Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS) capabilities with
system resource monitoring and UNIX client support. It provides network
and intranet software metering and auditing and the capacity to manage
remote Novell NetWare LANs. It has a new graphical reporting
configuration and an application launch utility to make the user
interface more manageable.
