Setup:
Supra Express 288i PnP internal modem (*Plug and Play* device)
ISA i/o controller card (Yakima S1372, make by Tyan).
TYAN II motherboard, Triton chipset, P5-75, Award BIOS 2.1 (latest)
Linux 1.2.8, Slackware 2.3
Problem:
There seems to be some kind of a irq/port conflict with the i/o ports
as defined by the I/O card and the modem, under Linux *and* DOS.
Symptoms:
1. Disabling, both the com ports on the board
a) Supra is happy, and I am able to use the modem perfectly.
Modem sits at 0x3f8, irq 4
Of course, now, I cannot use the mouse.
2. Diabling com1 and enabling com2 on the board
a) The modem works perfectly. (0x3f8, irq4)
b) The mouse does not work. But there is some responce, because,
pressing the mouse buttons like a madman, one can see the mouse cursor
(gpm), intermittently. (once every 2-3 minutes)
I have tired moving the irq to 10, 15, etc, but there is *no*
improvement. This is really strange!
Have made sure that /dev/modem, /dev/mouse, were
pointing correctly.
3. Enable both the com ports on the I/O card
a) Com ports sit at 0x3f8 and 0x2f8 (using jumpers on the board),
Modem seems to sit at 0x3e8.
Using minicom:
ATH, does not give me the usual OK. Made sure, echo was on,
ATE1 etc.
*However*, the modem does take in commands, because I can get
it to dial. It dials, makes the connection etc, and then
finally drops the connection (I can hear it) but, of course,
I see nothing on the screen, which is what is happenening
when it does not report back an OK for the ATH, I think.
Modem takes about 5 seconds to respond, to an ATDT command.
Mouse works ok.
b) Moved the com ports around, same thing as above.
Some observations:
The modem always seems to grab 0x3f8 and irq 4, no matter what. I was
told from the TYAN support that the reponsibility of assigning ports,
irq etc was the OS's. However, I simply cannot move the modem, using
setserial.
I would appreciate some pointers.
thanks,
Senthil
