I've had ST12550N's since revision 10, and ST32550N's since revision 9
(pre-production) and while I've had a few drive failures, overall I've
been very happy with the product. I've had excellent experiences with
Seagate - both at the local level and at the corporate level (my local
rep involved the VP for Quality Assurance when I raised an issue). Many
of my offhand suggestions have actually been implemented and are now in
the field. And I'm just an end user, buying maybe a few hundred drives a
year, all from various distributors.

I've seen a lot of baked drives, not just Seagate ones. Looking at some
magazine ads, I see a lot of "big players" doing the "slap it in a case
and ship it". The detailed Seagate product manuals are free for the asking -
either do your own research or find somebody dependable to do it for you.
Size is no guarantee that things are done right.
