He does not necessarily use a Voodoo card. At this point Mesa (which is the Opengl-like driver for Linux) supports Riva 128, Riva TNT, TNT2, GeForce, Voodoo (all but rush), several ATI cards and more. In order to give a specific answer on how to install Mesa (the OGL you will need) you will need to specify which video card you have. At that point I can give you a brief overview of what to do. As a start cruise over to http://www.mesa3d.org/, the complete documentation is there along with a list of supported chipsets. Could you outline what to do for a Voodoo3 3000? (bonus points for glut? I'm trying to get into graphics programming) -andrew Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I wasn't aware that Mesa (in cooperation with Xfree86 at least) supported any 3D acceleration on any ATi graphics cards. If you know something I don't please let me know (this little old laptop with a 4MB ATi Rage LT Pro would be very pleased to hear anything you have to say ;) Shrike ------ Posted via news://freenews.netfront.net Complaints to news@netfront.net

The Voodoo chipset is probably one of the easiest cards to get working. It is very similar to the setup of a Voodoo2 card. Basically what you need to do is head on over to the 3dfx website and download the source RPM for the glide library. Compile that. Install that. I think you need to reboot then as this is a modular driver...you can now write programs for glide with this (I think, Ive never done it myself, glide is a rasterizer and a pain the butt) now your voodoo is recognized as a device by the kernel... Then you want to head over to the www.mesa3d.org site. Here you can download the newest version of MESA. MESA is the open GL like library we all know and love... Im sure there are RPMS around somewhere, but its probably better to compile it. The newest version of MESA has the Voodoo driver built into it. So if you get the source for MESA you also have the source for the voodoo driver. You want to compile this, read the readme. There is a specific switch like ./configure Linux_with_voodoo or something like that. You want to use that switch. Compile it, install it. It should be straightforward. Also get the demos from the mesa3d.org site, and compile and install those too. Now you should have the mesa library and glide installed... I do not think that the voodoo3 supports windowed rendering in X due to the nature of the SST shipset on the voodoo cards, voodoo4 should tho. At this point your card should be working. Run the demos in the MESA directory to verify they are working. Now you should be able to just follow the glut instructions. Glut makes its calls through mesa. I may be wrong, but I think glut is actually compiled when you compile MESA 3.1, but I might be wrong. Some links to related material: http://www-hmw.caribel.pisa.it/fxmesa/index.shtml http://www.mesa3d.org/ http://glide.xxedgexx.com/ (might be dead)

Some ATI cards are supported. They are not supported officially by Brian Paul however (the writer of MESA). Basically what happens is Brian Paul wrote the library of MESA, but you need to have a method of transferring the MESA calls to your video card, i.e. a driver for your card that supports GL. There is a team that has made a driver like this for ATI cards, they are located at: http://glx.on.openprojects.net/ I dont have an ATI card, so Im not sure how well or if it works. -Kevin John Bland <shrike@carrot.linuxgrrls.org> wrote in message news:slrn88kc59.8hl.shrike@carrot.linuxgrrls.org... > >In article <85io5k$8b6$1@skates.gsfc.nasa.gov>, > > "Kevin Kamel" <kkamel@pop300.gsfc.nasa.gov> wrote: > >> He does not necessarily use a Voodoo card.
