USR Sportster 144 - wont play ball

Hi everyone,

I'm an experienced Linux hacker, but my modem is really annoying me.
Its fine under Win95, but will not work for Linux 2.x. I used to use
it with a 1.2.8 kernel(slackware/infomagic dist.) but it doesn't want
to work now???

Its an internal and is set for COM3(/dev/cua2) and IRQ 5 on the card.
I run setserial to inform Linux of this and enable hardware handsaking
on the serial port with "stty crtscts </dev/cua2".

Using minicom, seyon or modem-stats I get no response or such a lag(30
seconds) just for it to echo my typing. But it still doesn't do
anything. I can't see any IRQ or base address conflicts and
/proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts don't show conflicts.

Any suggestions??? This is preventing me from doing everything from
Linux as automated cron jobs. I'm stuck with Win95 until I can get
this working. Help!!

The only thing I can think of is either the serial driver for my
infomagic developer's resources - slackware installation is no good(I
can't believe that), or having modules in my kernel is preventing it
from working somehow. That's all thats changed.

Paul.

I see nobody has tried to help you yet. So I'll try - at what might be a
very simplistic level.

Some time ago I worked with UNIX on Sun SPARC workstations - specifically
trying to get a dongle to work on a serial line. I seem to remember that
the system calls used to access the serial line were critical. There
were several options to define how and when the serial driver reported
the arrival of a character to the calling program - one was immediate and
occurred with every character (as you would like) but most of the others
assumed you wanted a line of data before the call returned - so either 80
characters or a timeout of about a second was a typical default.

Now of course you're not writing code. I think the same control settings
were available in some sort of driver configuration setup - some option
in "stty ....". At risk of being dammned, have you tried the man pages?

Hope this helps .....

Just a little note, which may or may not help:
I use a Creatix VFi 14.4, an internal modem, also IRQ5, with Rockwell
chipset, together mith the excellent mgetty/sendfax package and Linux
2.0.29. Instead of using cua2 I use ttyS2, as the docs in mgetty told me
so (I think its a difference in how the lock-files are made), and I have
not recognized the above problems. So maybe ttyS2 may help?

hope this helps,
	Martin

Thanks to all the people who sent mail saying read the man pages!!!
What a complete waste of bandwidth. If you read the above, its clear I
know how to use stty and setserial to config a serial port.

Anyway, no-one's came up with any answers, but I'd like to add this:
I did a RedHat 4.1 install on a spare disk which I stuck in my machine
just for the install. Curiously, using exactly the same setserial and
stty commands - the modem works fine - discuss????

Paul.
