Hello All,
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU'VE SET UP AN S3
VIDEO CARD WITH XFree86-3.1 OR KNOW
ANYTHING ABOUT SETTING UP AN XF86Config
FILE IN XFree86-3.1
THIS IS RUNNING ON LINUX WITH A KERNEL
OF 1.1.0 RUNNING
OK, here's my problem in explained in the shortest way possible....
I've installed XFree86-3.1 perfectly (can fire up the Mono server), but I
can't figure out the correct XF86Config entry for my card (I need the bit
for the accelerated cards). It complains about everything I put in there...
Here's the most I can figure out about it - if there's any more I should've
included pleaze tell me so I (might) repost it....
* Full name (on manual): Expert Colour DSP3864/P S3 864 VL/PCI Bus VGA CARD.
* Uses the Vision864 chipset which should be supported in 3.1
* Said to be *the* most common S3 PCI video card in Australia.
* Don't worry about the VGA bit, it can go all the way up to 1280x1024x16 or
1024x786x256.
* I've got the PCI version with 1 Mb RAM.
* SuperProbe 2.2 gave me this info:
First video: Super-VGA
Chipset: S3 Vision864
Memory: 1024 Kbytes
RAMDAC: AT&T 20C492 15/16/18-bit DAC with gamma correction
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))
* This is the sample for what I'm having problems with:
Section "Screen"
Driver "accel"
Device "Actix GE32+ 2MB"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
Virtual 1280 1024
EndSubsection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Weight 565
Modes "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubsection
EndSection
* This is what it says (i've got the S3 server linked to X, so don't worry
about that):
XFree86 Version 3.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6000)
Operating System: Linux
Configured drivers:
S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
mmio_928, s3_generic
(using VT number 7)
XF86Config: /root/XF86Config
(**) stands for supplied, (--) stands for probed/default values
(**) Mouse: type: Microsoft, device: /dev/mouse, baudrate: 1200
Config Error: /root/XF86Config:294
Device "Actix GE32+ 2MB"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Not a declared device
giving up.
xinit: Invalid argument (errno 22): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
No matter what I try changing for Device I can't get it to work.
Help! What should I do?????
Any help will *GREATELY* be appreciated

This means that you don't have a Device section defined for "Actix GE32+ 2MB".
Please refer to the sample XF86Config file, and the XF86Config man page
to see how Devices are defined.
Also, since you don't have an "Actix GE32+ 2MB", you should set up a Device
section for the board you have. You will run into problems if you try
to use the "Actix GE32+ 2MB" entry.

Also the 2.x servers had commands like 'X -probeonly' and 'X -showconfig' which provide useful info for setting them up. Let me know how you go as I also have an #9 GXE64 S3 864 and as soon as I get 3.1 I want to install it. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | John SAUNDERS - AARnet johns@rd.scitec.com.au - #include <stddisclaimer.h> | | SCITEC Communication Systems - Phone +61 2 428 9541 - Fax +61 2 418 6954 | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

What goes here is the keyword from the "Identifier" field from the

This one is similar - only this time it's the "Identifier" field from
the Section "Monitor" part.

If you were using XFree 2.1.x you'll probibly find it much easier to use
the reconfig program to convert your XConfig to an XF86Config (See the
INSTALL file).

If you specify this device you need a Section "Device"; something like:
-- cut ---
Section "Device"
Identifier "Actix GE32+ 2MB"
VendorName "Actix"
BoardName "GE32+ 2MB"
Chipset "s3_generic"
VideoRam 2048
Clocks 25.20 28.32 40.00 0.00 50.10 77.50 36.00 44.90
Clocks 63.00 100.20 79.90 31.50 110.10 65.00 75.00 94.50
Ramdac "ATT20C490"
EndSection
-- cut ---
(don't use these clocks)

Is the clock generator chip still supported in 3.1 as:
Clocks "icd2061a"
This might be better than specifying the clocks individually.

Err, nearly no problems. When I try to use it with more than 1024x768 the server crashes. But I think that is because I only have 1 MB Video Ram. -- "MS-DOS: Just say No!" -- Achim Reckeweg | Ci$: 100065,37 Berlin, Germany | email: rg@kirk.in-berlin.de
