I have linux (slackware ) installed on a Toshiba 5200 laptop, all working fine except for the only reason for it existing - it will not recognise the ethernet card, I have tried with a WD 8003 EP and an NE2000 clone, which works on my other Linux box. The system does not see the card on boot up, no error messages are reported. I have tried the ne2k diagnostic from Don Becker's site and that reports the NE2000 correctly on IRQ 5 and 0x300 as set on the card. Both of these cards work fine when booted on the Win3.11 system on the same machine Any ideas ? Ed

In kernel version 2.*.* they went to hiding the NE2000 cards in the configuration script. Once you get into networking cards it will ask you about 'other ISA cards' with the default being 'no'. You've got to take 'yes' and then you get a whole bunch more cards, including the NE2000. Recompile the kernel with that enabled, and your probe should see it. -= Jim =-

Modify this and put it into your /etc/lilo.conf:
append = "ether=11,0x240,eth0"
or pass the ``ether=...'' to the kernel by whatever means you use for
booting.
Maybe you could restrain yourself to one or two news groups
next time? Also, ``aus.computers.linux'' is an Australian news group,
hence the ``aus.'' ;-)
Cheers,

If you know the addresses of the shared memory, you can them also mention, e.g.: ether=5,0x300,0xd0000,0xd4000,eth0 Dirk.

Try putting an ether= parameter in at the boot: prompt when LILO comes up, and see if that works (look up LILO docs for the exact syntax). ...
