I have assembled a small LAN using ne2100 ethernet cards, with a Linux box as a gateway to the other machines, which are Win 95. I tried to download a file from the Linux box to a Win 95 machine and the transfer rate was around 60 kbps. This seems awfully slow for a 10 Mbps LAN which only had two machines on it at the time!! It is 10Base2 (Thin coax) and yes I did have each end terminated with a 50 ohm terminator. I even removed a terminator during the transfer just to see what would happen and...it stopped. (surprise surprise) Can anyone suggest why it was so slow? I must admit that the Linux box was a 386 DX33 running X-Window, Netscape, Apache on ports 80 and 8080 and at the moment I suspect the delay was just in the 386 servicing ftp.d amongst everything else....but I would appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks, Ian.

Here is a couple problems: 1) NE 2100 is not the best card out there in terms of performance, 3COM's cards require a lot less CPU load. 2) I suspect your problem is the 386 that is serving. I have a Cyrix 166 with a PCI based ethernet card (Dec 21141) and I routinely get ftp transfers out or in to this box on the order of 600 Kbytes per second or more depending how loaded our network is. On the otherhand NFS writes go at 200 Kbytes or less and AFS is somewhere in between. SAMBA runs a little bit better than NFS. If you are running Windows 95 and Linux why not use Samba and Microsoft networking. That works beautifully. Best regards and good Luck. I have a Cyrix 166 : with a PCI based ethernet card (Dec 21141) and I routinely get ftp I wouldn't blame the 386 for being the slow end strait away, it could be win95. I was getting pretty crappy transfers between a 386SX-16 running Linux and a 486DX-33 running win 3.11. At first I thought it had to be the poor old 386SX, but when I ran Linux on the 486, the performance increased by about 30% !!! Admittedly win95 is a different beast to win3.11 , but they are not that different... ABO
