Hi, I'm using these newsgroups as a last resort, because I'm stumped.. This is probably a very simple thing, but as a novice to linux, i'm not getting very far. I log onto my ISP using PPP and chat etc.. all is cool there.. I have complete communications eg. pinging works great. However, when I run tin -r or rtin to fetch newsgroups etc.. I get the error message set.your.NNTPSERVER.variable: unknown host I've tried set NNTPSERVER <domain>, NNTPSERVER=<domain> etc, in my profile etc. basically.. no matter what I do, it comes up with the same error.. Can anyone help with suggestions/answers.. it would be appreciated. Please email me on gleff@gil.com.au Thanks in advance. Geoff

The script looks something like this: NNTPSERVER=<my.news.server> export NNTPSERVER rtin -q -p lpr Instead of running rtin, I type "NEWS", and leave it at that. :-) Be forewarned, rtin takes a _long_ time to start up... I tend to start rtin running whilst doing other projects that I _dont_ need bandwidth for on my 28.8 line... Like writing projects, or cooking dinner, or reading. I tend to use pine for news, though... Yeah, its not a threaded news reader, but hey -- it loads in tolerably quick (compared to rtin). I keep thinking of collecting news on my machine... But, first, I need another hard drive... But then I couldn't upgrade my motherboard, or ram, or net connection... I hate tough choices. > > Please email me on gleff@gil.com.au > > Thanks in advance. > > Geoff > > > Scott David Gray reply to: sdavid@tiac.net http://www.tiac.net/users/sdavid

It actually looks to me like something is overwriting the environment variable. it says this when I start up tin -r Connecting to set.your.NNTPSERVER.variable and of course it can't find that as a news server. I've tried exporting my variables, putting the one line newsserver in the file called nntpserver in /etc This really has me stumped. Any help would be appreciated.. thanks again if you reply via email.. BTW tin has a useful command line option that ONLY loads those newsgroups you are subscribed to, and is MUCH faster that way. start it as, tin -r -n That should speed things up :)

Easy fix:
in your .profile file, set NNTPSERVER=(whatever yours is)
then by starting tin-r or rtin, you should use this server.
(worked for me)
P.S. If you are using a modem connection, I recommend using tin -rqn after
the initial start (once you have subscribed to the groups you want). This
causes tin to forego checking for new groups every time it starts and I found
it made for a speedier connect.

Ok, here's a followup question about tin over NNTP in Linux. I can read news just fine via my NNTP server, but when I try to post, I get a: 441 Posting failed message which makes reading news on that system rahter pointless. Any help is appreciated. Chris

At least on FreeBSD my nntpd was trying to write to /usr/tmp. Making a symlink from /var/tmp to /usr/tmp did the trick. /mark -- +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ | Mark Hannon,| FreeBSD, Free Unix for your PC | mark@seeware.DIALix.oz.au| | Melbourne, | PGP key available by fingering | epamha@epa.ericsson.se | | Australia | seeware@melbourne.DIALix.oz.au | | +-=-=-=-=-=-=-+-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+
