your pppd is most likely getting disconnected. I had the same problem so I started using RP3 via usernet and I was able to maintain my connection once I got the usernet configured. patrum jasbo wrote: > currently i am trying to connect to my isp with kppp but after the modem > dial it just hangs. I had the same problem. When I started using Usernet it went away. Also tried kmvdial, pretty handy also. There are a lot of people complaining about kppp lately (including me). It was working fine for me in my COL2.3 distro with the KDE and kppp that shipped. Now I am playing with Peanut Linux (kernel 2.2.14, KDE1.1.2) and the exact same thing is happening mostly as user (not root). As soon as I connect, I immediately get disconnected with the error that "Sorry, the pppd daemon has died unexpectedly". I wonder if KDE.org is aware of this and addressing the issue?? I have downloaded a dialer from freshmeat.net called XISP that looks like it could be promising. I haven't installed and tried it yet. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon. blariz Kevin Kamel <kkamel@pop300.gsfc.nasa.gov> wrote in message news:85io95$8el$1@skates.gsfc.nasa.gov... > I had the same problem. Thanks for the tip, I will go to KDE.org and check for the FAQ's. Checking /var/log/messages tells me that the dialer (for me both kppp and gnome-ppp) can't get access to /dev/ttyS3 - the modem. Works fine from root. I've tried several combinations of permissions, ownership and group with all files involved (pppd, kppp or gnome-ppp and /dev/ttyS3), no luck. Still works fine from root reguardless of what I do and will immediately disconnect when I hit connect from the user account. -- Randy Powell "Reality is just a convenient level of complexity" Steven Lassiter

Hi, when I changed from KDE V1.01 to V1.1.1 I had similar problems. Somwhere in the net I found the advice to change the modem speed in the preferences of kppp (simply change, the value doesn't matter!). And after that it worked. I do not know why. ttfn Uli ___________________________________ // <( ) // \______// // \____/ Ulrich Brachvogel // / \ "Save The Curlew!"

* be sure pppd is the binary and not a script.
* be sure that pppd is setuid root
* be sure /etc/ppp/options exist and there are no wrong entries, when
you are not sure, leave it empty.
* uncheck the option use lock file
* remove the lock in /etc/ppp/options
* if the symbolic link /dev/modem causes problems,.
Use the real port ( -> setup->modem->device)
ttyS0 -> COM1
ttyS1 -> COM2
ttyS2 -> COM3
ttyS3 -> COM4

Patricia, I belive that's the wrong advice you're giving. There is an AWFUL but in RH 6.1 which requires you to do two things to stop that message. 1. put "noauth" in the /etc/ppp/options file 2. After the connection is made, type route add default ppp0 To permanently correct the second problem, you can generally go into /etc/sysconfig, and edit the file called "network", and take out any value after GATEWAY=. This will stop the default route being set on boot. The problem people are complaining about bitterly and frequently has nothing to do with ppp misconfiguration, or chat scripts. Yes, it helps to have suid set to root on pppd, but the problem people are having is caused by Red Hat not doing their homework. They should be ashamed at a bug like this which is causing almost everyone (with a network card perhaps) to have an impossible time connecting to the internet. How do they expect people to convert to this great platform, when they make it so tough. The fix to this (and the parallel port not detected problem which you are also aware of) should be posted with blinking lites and big fonts so that people with a problem can spot it easily. Maybe something like "Red Hat 6.1 users check here for important bug fix information". That doesn't make the stock price go up, but it gives newbies some help. Corel's kppp is broken. To fix it (as root) at command prompt type: "mv /etc/ppp/options /etc/ppp/options.old <enter>(renames file) "touch /etc/ppp/options" <enter>(creates new file) don't type quotemarks It works as long as everything else is setup correctly Good Luck!! blariz wrote: > > Thanks for the tip, I will go to KDE.org and check for the FAQ's. The default route was the problem I was having. It was inserted automatically by the installer when it detected my network card. I found that when I installed on a different box (with Redhat 6.1) and told it NOT to setup my NIC, that it worked fine. I then set up my NIC by hand afterwards. I also converted to usernet at that time because KPPP was pissing me off from the previous install. Regardless mine works fine now. If people want copies of any of my files let me know, Ill post. -Kevin Kevin Kamel <kkamel@pop300.gsfc.nasa.gov> wrote in message news:85io95$8el$1@skates.gsfc.nasa.gov... > I had the same problem.
