I had similar problems.  One way to fix it is use the SVGA drivers instead of 
the Tident ones.  You could also get new drivers.  If you go to 
ftp.cica.indiana.edu and in pub/drivers/video (i think) you can find a file 
called ul61-2.zip.  These are beta versions of the 9400CXi drivers and they 
seem to work fine.  If you cannot find them let me know.
