Netscape 4.04 won't get web pages under Warp 3 (plain).

Netscape 4.04 works fine on my business Warp 3 Connect machine but it won't get any pages off the web on a Warp 3 (plain machine - with FP39). It says it is looking up the URL and just gets stuck there. If you type a non-existent URL it says correctly the URL cannot be found on the DNS. Netscape 2.02 works fine. Ping(ing) the IAP's or their DNS's IP addresses gets the correct responses. I had a look for updates to tcp/ip for Warp 3 plain but found nothing. Would someone comment please? Let me get this straight. You are trying to use a Warp 3 PC to read HTML on
a Warp 3 Connect PC. You did not mention what web server is running on the
Warp 3 Connect PC. If the two PCs are on a LAN, you can use Peer networking
to read the mapped (eg. G:\) file on another PC, have you tried that?
eg.:
file:///G|/PATH/DOCUMENT.HTML

Obviously the Warp 3 plain has no ability to link to my LAN. I had a modem attached to it and dialed up to check it all out. So it only had a dialup connection. Both Netscape 2.02 & 4.04 have been left at "directly connect to the Internet". Under those conditions 2.02 works fine but 4.04 doesn't. I'm wondering whether the tcpip 4.? (can't remember) I have on my Connect machine (mentioned purely for comparison which separately can dialup and runs 4.04 fine) is the determining factor? If it is I wonder whether I can install the dialup bits only. Obviously in the Warp 3 plain machine there is no mpts 52?? which is a "prerequisite" for tcpip 4.? So I'm a bit pussy foot <g> to try it and wondered whether you guys know. I may just try it anyway. TIA Victor Bien

Victor sorry about the confusion. I usnderstand you are trying to reach a Warp
3 PC via a dial up connection. What web server software are you using on the
PC (Apache, ... )? I would check your configuration settings on your web server
and be sure a "default" index.html exists in the proper directory. Then you can
hopefully type in the IP address and read that first crucial index.html. I hope
that helps.

I would check your configuration settings on your web server Thanks James but oh boy its so easy to be misunderstood! No I'm trying to get a Warp 3 plain box up as a demo machine capable of dialing up to the Internet using a modem. The dialup other internet provider works fine. I just use my IAP for testing purposes. Firing up Netscape 2.02 allows browsing the web in the usual way. Firing up Netscape 4.04 just results it trying to contact the host and it sitting there dumb indefinitely. No reply is received and thus no contact and receiving of data happens. The Warp 3 plain installation has had FP39 applied. The tcpip is as original Warp plain installation I think. Now going over to the Warp 3 Connect machine and doing the same thing both Netscapes work perfectly. The Warp Connect has had FP39 applied and MPTN 8423 and TCPIP 4.0 using the package IC17248 applied. I'm not trying to get the Warp 3 plain machine to talk to the Connect machine in anyway. The two runs just mentioned were just "back to back" comparisons. If applying the TCPIP 4 fix doesn't fix things this would mean that the lowest level of Warp Netscape 4.04 can run on is Warp Connect as distinct from its plain cousin. Regards Victor Bien

No reply [stuff cut] > If applying the TCPIP 4 fix doesn't fix things this would mean >that the lowest level of Warp Netscape 4.04 can run on is Warp >Connect as distinct from its plain cousin. Applying TCPIP 4 fix had no effect. Installing the Warp Connect networking stuff only (and effectively turning Warp 3 into Warp Connect brought Netscape 4.04 to life. The network stuff came straight off the original CD-ROM - no fixpack relating to the network stuff was applied (of course the main part of Warp is at FP39). So my inference above is empirically confirmed. Victor Bien VCB Computing Alternatives (R) Employing network marketing concepts to promote OS/2 The network is the channel (apologies to Sun). Yes, of course Injoy or IGate can be used to turn the Connect machine into a proxy server so another machine LANed to it can access the Internet. That's what my Connect workhorse machine does which is handy when say my kid wants to get on the Internet at the same time I'm working away or when some page requires the facilities available only under Win9x. We have now clarified that so that you have just been able to say "So now the question is why the setup works in your case and doesn't with mine." That means that as a result of networking you now know something that you did not know before. I therefore take strong exception to your comment "But then I'm not getting a lift from you guys. Networking is weakened if you don't play the game. What I want is hard info not vague memories." If I had not "played the game" you would still be in your ignorant darkness believing that Netscape 4.04 does not run in Warp 3 (Plain, not Connect). Stephen

Apologise for losing my cool - due to frustration! If I was pursuing these questions as a hobby I would have been more relaxed but as a business, time is money ... However, at this point it seems none of us are wiser as to the critical difference. With the way I set the machine up 4.04 won't work on Warp3 + FP39 but place the Connect stuff on it and it does. This jacks up the cost. Ciao Victor B.
