I have been running OS/2 for years, from version 1.2 all the way to Warp ver 3.0 with fixpack 26, and never have I had so many problems updating as when updating to Warp ver 4.0. In two separate areas of the installation the installation program generates a general protection error and I end up with a system with vital parts missing. There is no multimedia device support (soundblaster), and absolutely no network (not even the installation program mentioned on page 72). I tried reinstalling from scratch, being very carefull to ensure that both the multimedia settings I entered and the network settings were correct (slip dial in network, previosly the Intenet Access Kit). Exactly the same problem with the second install, two general protection errors and no network and multimedia support. Now my patience with IBM installation programs was getting a bit strained, so I started to edit my config.sys by hand. After including a few device lines from my old config.sys I was able to get multimedia up and running, and after selectively reinstalling multimediasupport, and removing the device lines I added, I even got multimedia to work as it is supposed to. But I Have found absolutely no way of even finding a reference to network or network installation in what is on my disk now. What do I do ? How do I get a second chance at network installation when there is no "Selective Install Network" menu on the desktop ? Every time I start a new installation my old desktop gets embedded another layer deeper into the hierarchy, and I really doubt that I can achieve anything by attempting. Isn't there a way of getting the network installation program off of the CDROM and starting it by hand? I havent tried accessing the maintenance desktop yet, but I dont think It will have the missing reference. I guess the network installation program coredumped at such an early time that no files were unpacket and no desktop objects were created. I spent the entire newyears day trying to upgrade OS/2. Would anyone please help me, I am getting a bit desperate. Please mail responses to jwj@dde.dk Thank you all for reading this Greetings from Denmark Jesper Wolf jespersen jwj@dde.dk

I found that the best results are to format over the accumulated sludge of multiple upgrades of older versions, and installing over the Merlin Beta is prohibited in the installation instructions. It took me about 8 hours from a formatted partition to restore it to the way I liked it, but it has been very stable since, and the installation went through with only one click of an OK button before it checked my monitor. kp

I am still not convinced this is a stable release but it is working! The way to get the networking installed is to: 1. Open an OS/2 Window 2. With the OS/2 WArp 4 CD_ROM in the drive change to the CD-ROM drive. 3. Type INSTALL, then press <ENTER>. 4. Press the NEXT button at the OS/2 Warp Installation screen. 5. When prompted, choose an INSTALLATION DRIVE to store the OS/2 WARP 4 installation files, then press OK. 6. Choose either EASY or ADVANCED installation. 7. Choose the networking services you wish to install. That worked for me. However, I did have an additional problem afterwards that would not allow me to start the MPTS configuration program. IBM was able to walk me through a fix for that and its fully functional.
