First of all: thank you for your input so far. I do feel as though I'm going to solve this one way or another. mike.luther@ziplog.com a οΏ½crit dans le message <6r55ie$oe$1@news2.myriad.net>... >Yes, to the THICK net question part. Both a larger diffent cable are >required as well as a special terminator connector device... > >Here, you can buy the special cross-over cable for nothing more than a >regular patch cable... or more or less that... I'll go and see if I can buy a cross=over cable. trouble is there are no good computing shops that I know of. I do have a cable from by cable modem: it uses a slightly larger than normal telephone jack and is I presume thick net cable. But I presume it has no crossover. > >Simon.. I guess I didnn't make it clear enough.. I gave up on thin net >with RG-58 cable! In my case, I *COULD have continued with it, once I >got the correct drivers for the cards. But, while playing and learning >what was going wrong, I decided to go buy a cheap hub The reason why I'm currently persevering, is that I only wanted to connect the computers together for 1/2 hour to transfer all my old files onto the new one. After that they were going to be stand alone until we move house and I can begin making holes in the wall. I went for the coax solution as it seemed to be cheap and easy (no hub costs, no special crossover cable etc). I did try a laplink cable but that did not seem to work either (but that was before I understood as much as I now do about peering). Perhaps I'l try to borrow it again. >As soon as I plugged in the CAT-5 and hooked it to the hub, I changed >the driver selection to TN and POOF! Instant success. > >Later on, after I got the driver deal all worked out, I went back and >tried the RG-58 cable connection on one box against the available cable >port on the Lingsport hub. It works there! > >In my case, regardless of WHAT type media I was selecting, and despite >that the test setup said the card was installed right (It worked in DOS, >recall?), OS/2 was seeing the card as THICK net. The large cable >requires a special adapter that plugs into a tri-media card with a >smiall BB-shell connector. No matter WHAT I did, the card was being >"seen" as THICK net and, of course, with no THICK net cabling.. it can't >see beyond it's nose! > I seem to be getting something similar. When I use the DOS config program to try and force it to use the coax port it complains that there is not network attached. In fact the wire leads to the other peer, but I guess that was not sending out anything that the card could detect. It made a similar complaint when I tried to set it to the RJ58 port when the thicknet cable was attached with the other end disconnected from the cable modem. Once the cable modem is attached it does not complain, and the autoselect also seems happy. Even forcing it to use the BNC port, and rebooting OS/2 peering would not start. Perhaps OS/2 is trying to force it to use the RJ58 port, but I can't see anyway of trying to override (its just not one of the options in MPTS, although I have been able to force BNC on the other computer with the D=Link 220P card).
