I haven't seen a programming editor (as opposed to a word processing editor or a system editor) in quite some time that couldn't be customized in how it is to handle tabs. All of the editors I have seen allow tabs to be used or not. Many allow incoming files converted to tabs or spaces and the same for outgoing files. Getting people to USE these features can be problem, but that is different from not having the features available. > If sumone has indented a line with HT,SP,SP,HT such an > editor feels free to make it HT,HT when its feature for indenting- > duplicating is uzed. Perhaps you need a new editor? <g> >In my code I indent with nothing but HT (I write neither Fortran nor COBOL). >If it is C, when printed it with tab-stops at least three columns >apart it looks all right. >If it is Bourne-shell code, well, it needs at least six columns. I find that indentation of two is only marginally readable (except in hiearchial lists where two appears to be closer to optimal), three appears to be optimal (in a fixed-width font) for readability and four is readable, but starting to be a problem for deeply nested structures and five or more is simply unreadable.
