I seem to be plagued with disconnections indicated as: The Modem has indicated that it has lost the signal. As a result, Voyager has been disconnected from the Internet. Now this is not too annoying under normal circumstances, but since I am a Cable & Wireless/Mercury subscriber, many of you will doubtless know that at weekends I can connect for as long as I like for a maximum charge of 50p. Consequently each time the connection is lost, charging starts again !! Over the ten weeks since the offer started, about four fifths of my connections have failed, at differing durations from 40 mins to over 4 hours. I have generally contacted C&W soon after, and on earlier occasions they said they could trace the call within one hour. At the time they could not prove whether the fault was theirs or elsewhere, so I got a couple of refunds. I dont always bother to re-connect. Then on several weekends C&W had computer problems and could not check anything. I use a Smart Socket plus and they thought this might be the cause, but by-passing it proved no help. C&W also suggested that I get BT to up the gain on my line, but since I was then on an analogue TX4E exchange, it was not possible. Earlier this month my exchange was changed over to digital, but the following weekend it happened again. This time C&W said they were able to check their switches, and they were not at fault, but that the call was broken at the other end, by my ISP PIPEX. I have also tried dialling in on a different number, but the problem remains. I have complained through Argonet /who have my account/ but had no response yet. Is there a PIPEX complaints number ? Anyone else had similar problems ? Can C&W, up to an hour later, tell where a connection failed ? I would add that I have not had this problem when connected via BT, but then I rarely exceed 60 mins when using BT. Any help gratefully received. I had this problem with BTI a while ago connecting through BT. The problem turned out to be a modem incompatibility between my Motorola 3400 and their modems. The problem was fixed when BTI provided me with a new init. string. Robert

Have you looked at your log files, these may give a clue to the cause.
Are there any "timers" for idle time ie time out after x minutes if there
is no activity at your system ???

I don't understand this comment. Do you mean that a machine using a dialup
account can't listen for incoming TCP connections? That would be somewhat
unenforcable, given the nature of many Internet protocols, where the TCP
connection is actually made in the reverse direction to that expected.
FTP, SMTP mail delivery, identd (used by IRC for example) and many other
services rely on daemons running on the "client". Add in the fact that many
other daemons are often running, if only to serve an intranet, but which
can also be called over the Internet. Even humble Windoze machines tend to
listen to at least port 139.
