I have CHEAP Internet access myself. $17.50 a month UNLIMITED/FULL Internet access, with a Local 28.8K Connect sight. I can be on 24 Hours a day 7 days a week and it would still only cost me 17.50 a month, and No Cost at all for the phone call. The thing it I have 1 phone line only. Reading/Writing message can take a long time, why tie up the phone line to do that? I Grab my messages, Hang up(People can now call me, or I can call out), take care of all that, then Log back on, send any replys, and get on the WEB, or FTP, whatever, and get off. It's bad enough trying to get a hold of me on my line as it's bust all the time, Using THOR to get everything helps greatly, that takes up most of my time. >Ciao... > Heiko Schnapp >-- >WindowsError 00C: Memory hog error. : Why Read your Mail online?
Because it's faster? Remeber that "online" != "over a modem link".

But i keep taps on more than 40 newsgroups, are you suggesting i download all of that? It would take ages, not to mention gigabytes of local storage.

Unless you are primarily referring to binary newsgroups, I find it hard to understand how you can make a qualified decission on which articles to bring home without spending more time than if you just download the lot of them. And if you deleted them immediately after browsing through them, they would hardly take up gigabytes of disk-space. Furthermore, nothing prevents you from downloading the articles while performing other on-line activities. How long does typically it take you to scan those 40 newsgroups and download the selected articles? -- Henrik Dissing E-mail: hendis@aix1.danadata.dk Tranbjerg, Denmark FidoNet: 2:238/24.6

I have 250meg allocated for my news spool. It takes 1hour and 20 minutes each day to transfer at 14.4 Most expire times are set at 7 days. Yes, there is a fair amount of connect time. But if you do it like I do, via UUCP, it's not really an issue. ---- "You get more with a kind word and a 2x4 then with a kind word alone" Remember the home hobbyist computer: Born 1975, died April 29, 1994

I stopped downloading messages when i left fidonet. I read things online a unix machine with Tin. Which gives me the ability to look into any of the 7000 news groups a few seconds notice, and search bodies/titles/headers of messages as well. I tried thor, but for me the interface is very difficult...not really designed to work on 640x256 screen.
