We need verion/source control for our BeOS development. I've tried BeVC which I can't get to work. Anyone have any ideas? -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/ Now offering spam-free web-based newsreading

RCS is included - look around in the docs. It doesn't support multiple users very well, but CVS does (and uses RCS to do the actual checkin/checkout stuff), and I believe you can find the source code to CVS, so it shouldn't be too hard to port... -Kev maher_dan@hotmail.com wrote in message <6i7fif$nk9$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>... >We need verion/source control for our BeOS development. You can look at http://www.cs.utah.edu/csinfo/texinfo/cvs/cvs_toc.html for more on CVS. CVS uses RCS under the hood to manage the versions. CVS adds the ability to better handle larger teams and even development at multiple sites. It's not the best system in the world, but it is free. Good luck, -Eric maher_dan@hotmail.com wrote: > > Yeah, I've seen RCS, it seems ok, but what's most important is to have it work > over a network. It has its own protocol/port/service these days. I believe the current version can still use rsh to talk with older versions (although obviously not with BeOS). I don't know if it's possible to set up a CVS server on BeOS or not, but it's certainly possible to use the client. We've been doing so at Gobe for around 9 months or so. We maintain the CVS repository on a linux box. -- Scott Lindsey Check out Gobe Productive at <http://www.gobe.com/>

Chip, Eric, thanks for your help. One more question: Have you guys set up remote repositories in CVS over a network? I tried yesterday with little success, and someone here said that since there was no rsh for UNIX on be, it was not going to work. If I can return the favor, let me know. Usually I'm good for C++ questions. The Geek Gadgets CVS repository is located on cvs.ninemoons.com, which is a linux machine. I do cvs operations all the time from both x86 BeOS and PPC BeOS. -Fred

Be Newsletter Volume II, Issue 5 (http://www.be.com/aboutbe/benewsletter/volume_II/Issue5.html) in the article "Engineering Insights: Using the BeIDE with RCS" mentions CVS as well as "P4" by Perforce. Perforce is at http://www.loria.fr/~molli/cvs-index.html. Set it up to run on a port (i.e. pserver mode). cvs will then open a socket to the server to do the transactions, eliminating the need for rsh. You must set some environment variables (IIRC). In pserver mode, you can even specify your own passwd file, to limit the users with access to the repository. I have not, however ran cvs in pserver mode on beos, only hte client end. Search for CVS and pserver. This is how I found how to do it the first time I tried, and I believe there's a lot of good information out there to find. Hope this helps, Chip
