how to do dual-head config? need some help

I have a vaxstation 4000-vlc with a nice VRT319 (?) color monitor.

What I want to do is add a second monitor (dual-head config), but the
second "spare" monitor I happen to have around is a monochrome (VRT19?)
monitor.   [both do 100dpi].

Can I do this, and if so, what special hardware is required?  i.e., I'm
not quite sure exactly HOW a dual-head config is set up.........
