Im in need of some help, I have had a VaxStation 3100 for some time now with no operating system installed, and finally managed to dig up an older version of Ultrix (version 2.2) on TK50. I am having a problem booting the standalone tape, the tape drive (a TZ30) comes up as MKA400, an RZ23 as DKA200, and a RZ24 as DKA300. I put the tape in and give the command boot mka400, the tape spins up all the way to the end, rewinds, then just sits there. I also get -MKA400- on the monitor, but that is it. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to set the boot flag to something? I know the tape drive works, I have used it on a DecStation 3100 with no problems. Since I dont have a manual for the VS Im not familiar with the beast at all. Any help would be appreciated. -Keith S. Huff kshuff@fast.net

Ultrix doesn't work (at least up to v4.4) with an SPX card, and on installation just appears to hang when booting. All may not be lost, however, as the *BSD guys are still porting to various VAX platforms, so we may see an SPX version yet! Of course if your 3100 is using a GPX card, then it's likely to be another problem entirely... Regards, Chris.

Let me get this straight, You have a VAXstation 3100 You have a DECstation 3100 You have a copy of Ultrix on TK50 that works OK on the DECsystem but not the VAXstation. This could be due to the fact that the Ultrix distribution you have is for the MIPS processors used in DECsystems rather than the VAX processors used in VAXes. OS options for VAXstations are Ultrix/VAX and VMS. At the time of going to keyboard, NetBSD/VAX will not support the internals of the VAXstations > Im in need of some help, I have had a VaxStation 3100 for some time now with > no operating system installed, and finally managed to dig up an older version > of Ultrix (version 2.2) on TK50.
