I am in process of selecting hardware and NOS for new accounting, manufacturing, distribution software package that runs on Oracle7 and is written entirely in Designer/Developer 2000. Can anyone provide advice/comments on advantages and disadvantages of a DEC Alpha machine over, say, a Compaq Intel-based machine? Also, advantages and disadvantes of UNIX vs. NT on said machines? Any feedback is much appreciated!! Kevin Arnold Colorbok Paper Products, Inc.

Alphas are faster (up to 600 MHz) than Intel chips. UNIX is a *LOT* more stable than NT.

Also will support VLM under WNT V5.0 (and actually supports Oracle8 VLM driver under WNT 4.0). > > Also, advantages and disadvantes of UNIX vs. NT on said machines? > WNT is less expensive than WNT. DUNIX is more scalable, clusterable, and reliable than WNT. Cheers, Terry Shannon Publisher, Shannon Knows DEC

Intel Pentiums are severely slowed by the old bottleneck 66Mhz bus. An old AlphaServer 2100A 5/250 4 cpu system with 128 bit bus blows the socks off any Intel machine that will be out for the next year or so. Today you can buy the new Alpha PC 600Mhz with a 200Mhz bus. When will Intel even have have a 100Mhz bus? Unless you go with Pentium Pro, adding more than 64Mb to an Intel system makes it go slower due to Intel stupid Tag ram limits. Intel has supposed to have have fixed problems with multiple cpu's but I haven't seen the data. A year ago, a 8 cpu Intel pentium system was slower than a 2 cpu system! Why doesn't DEC advertise all this???? Ray T.
