I have a Mustek Paragon Series flatbed scanner, MFS-6000CX. I'd
highly recommend it for color pictures (because you can't beat the
price), but not much for text. It does have Adobe Photoshop 2.5
lite edition. Although it's supposed to be a bit limited in features,
it's an awesome program. I don't know what they "limited" -- it's
EXTREMELY powerful. However, the OCR software (Wordlinx) that
comes with this scanner is terrible.

If you're willing to pay up to $800, I'd suggest that you might
want to go for one of the top-rated scanners, the HP Scanjet IICX.
They are selling it at CompUSA for $759 or something like that,
after a $150 mail-in rebate from HP. Plus, it comes with Calera
WordScan OCR software. I don't know what (if any) graphics
editing software it has.

>(Also, are there any newsgroups where scanners are discussed?)

Not that I know of. :)
