David--

I just installed a WD 1.6 and a promise 2300+ and am very sasisfied. The
new drive screams compared to my slow old Seagate 120M.

Things to look for when evaluating a drive include RPM, latency and seek
time. They are interrelated. WD had a good combo, the only concern was
that the RPM was 5200 compared with 5400 on some other drives. As a
percentage, tho, the difference is quite small.

The other thing to consider is rather nebulous, but perhaps most
important of all--that is the mechanical quality of the drive. Seagate
and WD are (so I am told) the two best in this regard.
