Everyone boasts about 70+ fps in Quake2, thats insane! My system: Epox EP-58MVP3C-M Motherboard K6-2 300mhz Voodoo3 3000 SBLive Value 64meg PC-100 ram (other stuff not important) I get ~30-40fps. Im not really complaining, because I use to get 5-13fps online on my P133 machine. Is this normal fps Im getting? I know Im a lil low on ram but... I use SB Live 2.0 sound drivers. And Voodoo3 drivers from 3dfx website (NOT the Q3 drivers). I cant remember if I play in 3dfx mode or in opengl mode. If memory serves me correctly, 3dfx mode wouldnt run. And another thing, when I have the higher quality sound, its not really high quality... it screeches and sound crackles when theres a bunch of sounds and stuff. Mabye I need new drivers or something? Maybe I should go read dejanews because Im sure my questions have been answered before :( -- ==================================================qSiG1.2= [Quentin MacDougall] - [quentin@cs.dal.ca] - [ICQ 5798952] [BSc. 1. Check you are using 16bit Desktop before starting Q2 2. Set CPU up at 3.5 x 100 and 2.3v..350 makes a big diff with the k6-2. 3. Add another 64mb of ram. 40 US dollars or so nowadays.. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ steevo J-E-T-S JETS! JETS!! I believe Suleyman is correct. Is Vsync disabled? If not, do so and your problems will most likely be over. don't overclock your cpu. if it's a 300, run it at 300 unless you are positive you know what you are doing. download the new SBLIVE drivers, they make a large difference believe it or not. Creative is the driver King. set your hard drive cache to min 4 mb max 4mb, set your swap file to 200 mb min and max. turn everything else off while you're playing. if that doesn't work, buy more ram and a faster cpu Is -q95- wrote: > Everyone boasts about 70+ fps in Quake2, thats insane! > > My system: > Epox EP-58MVP3C-M Motherboard > K6-2 300mhz > Voodoo3 3000 > SBLive Value > 64meg PC-100 ram > (other stuff not important) > > I get ~30-40fps. Try disabling Vsynch. Some V3 overclocking programs do it. Visit www.voodoo3.net and check the resources there.

That's definitely not normal for a computer with that CPU, video card, and amount of RAM. And you're not low on RAM, 64 is still quite a bit to most people. Chances are that your drivers aren't installed properly or something if the 3dfxGL mode in Quake2 isn't working. Or maybe there's some sort of incompatibility with the version # of Quake2 you're running and your Voodoo3 card. Do you have version 3.20? > Mabye I need new drivers or something? Maybe I should go read dejanews > because Im sure my questions have been answered before :( Um, how old are your drivers? It's always best to have the absolute latest drivers for all of your hardware.

I get around 67 fps with a K6 2 350 and 64 megs of ram and a Voodoo 2 SLI setup at 1024x768. You should be getting about the same. Make sure that you have the latest 3DNow patch for Quake 2 version 3.20 that you can get from AMD at their web site: http://www.amd.com/support/software.html This patch will improve frame rates immensely. I think that the Voodoo 3 drivers are currently tweaked for 3DNow. Also make sure that you keep the number of programs running in the background to the bare minimum that you need. Install mingl v1.48 and _choose_ 3dfx opengl in Quake2 and enjoy :).
