TNT2 or Voodoo3 or neither?

Hi, I have a P2-300 w/ 64 megs of RAM with a CL Voodoo2 8 meg. I'm trying to decide whether it'd be worth it to upgrade to a TNT2 or a V3. Is my system fast enough to make an upgrade worth it? Would the 32-bit support of the TNT2 run fast enough to actually use it over 16-bit? The main game I will be playing in the future is TFC for Halflife, since I am a hardcore TF1 clan player, and I think that everyone will move over to TFC. Would a new video card boost my performance in Halflife enough to get rid of my V2 and add a TNT2 or V3? I already have someone that is willing to buy my V2 for $100 cdn. And if it is worthwhile, which card should I get? I plan on upgrading my processor sometime around Christmas when the next generation of Intel chips roll after (post P3). Thanks for your help, Tim (remove NOSPAM if you wish to email me)

What is happening to this thread? This is stupid. Jeez...then Prince Vaporware sneaks into the night and sleeps with all the princes and king's wives and concubines. After 9 months, they all have his babies and his descendants eventually rule the land because the bloodline of nVidia and 3dfx no longer exists. What I don't understand is that the TNT2 is just a faster TNT with AGP 4x and more memory etc. Does it have new 3d features like hardware bump mapping, enviroment mapping, full screen anti aliasing, texture compression, etc.? The TNT-2 will probably be the fastest by 10% or so. I definitely do not think it is a next generation card, but a faster current generation card. My previous point was that the cards haven't even been shipped yet but because of Tom a vaporware card is already name the king of 3d. You even say the words yourself. That is just BS...at least for a few months. Personally, I rather have a card that is 10-25% slower than the TNT-2 but have cool new 3d features. Being the king has more to do with public opinion than with real world performance. Currently 3Dfx is the king of 3D gaming, do they have the best all-around card? Not really, the image quality of the voodoo2 is lacking and it doesn't destroy the other cards in every benchmark. But guess what card is in my system? yup a voodoo2, which bought because I respected 3Dfx as a company. After seeing the Voodoo3 I though "oh crap, they did everything I was hopeing they wouldn't do" which is just release a faster version of the Banshee. Currently in my mind the TNT2 is the king of the NEXT gen of cards, hopefully 3Dfx takes the next round and all those other companies can go to hell. -- Mr. Mojo "And a thousand thousand slimy things Lived on; and so did I." Since I only have a P2-300, will a TNT2 give me that much more of a boost in games like Halflife to make it worthwhile to upgrade? Is it worth keeping the V2 for Glide only games, when I'm cashed strapped as it is? I could get $100 cdn for the V2, making the TNT2 a lot cheaper. When you hype one board declaring it "king of 3d cards" before nVidia releases official specs, finishing drivers and any other companies releasing official specs like whether or not 175mhz is the final clockrate, I *do* think it is mostly Tom's fault. If you ever read his CeBIT blurb you would obviously see his bias against 3dfx. Compare that to another CeBIT report like the one at 3d Concepts. Also, if you look at Tom's CeBit Blurb you would have seen the beta benchmarks for the PowerVR 250 Neon which got 49fps in 1024x768 Q2 Crusher demo verses the Ultra TNT2's 50fps or so. I don't think Crusher demo is a good 3d test but that is another issue. I think that it obviously proves that it is too premature to declare a king when there are several promising cards in the near future. Thats Tom's fault? I thought it was because most of the other cards you mentioned were gonna get their ass kicked by the TNT2/Voodoo 3. Nivida and 3dFX are the only two companies who have religious followings (since all the other ones have been useless up until now) so they are the ones that get the most hype. Wait and see...everyone is pretty much arguing over cards that are not available. We may not see the final clock of the Diamond Ultra TNT-2 at 175mhz. We may see driver optimizations and better SSE or 3dNow! support. Why is it only the TNT2 or the V3? There are 3 or 4 cards coming soon which will have more 3d functions than either the TNT-2 or V3. I feel it is because of Tom Pabst's hype on the TNT-2 vs V3 which shows the result of bad journalism. We should also be talking about the PowerVR 250 Neon, the G400, Savage 4 or Permedia 3. There are 4 other cards and why are we only talking about 2 of 6 future cards? Tom Pabst is the reason.

Even if the V3 ends up being faster, stick to the TNT2....image quality is so much better in 16 bit AND 32 bit that it isn't worth the small performance increase of the V3. Take a look at the Permedia 3 preview at Sharkey's - P3 silicon has been shipping to IHVs for at least a month, and was in evidence at CEBiT from several vendors, as well as preview cards getting to the reviewers. You are correct about the G400 though... -B
