Hi,
I am hoping that someone out there can help me. I have a Power
Macintosh and access to a Pentium 90, both networked, that I do graphics
work on. I need to find a way to get graphics from either of these to an
Amiga 2500 w/ Video Toaster that is not networked and, from what I can
tell, can't read mac or PC formatted disks. Are there any utilities for
the Mac or the PC that can let them read and write to Amiga formatted
disks? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Jeffrey Greenhouse

Hi Jeffrey Greenhouse In Your case the task is very clear. Get "Graphicconverter" from any info-mac server. You should be abel to find it under gst/grf/graphic-converter-231.hqx. It will convert most of PC, ATARI, AMIGA into MAC-graphic-formats and vice versa. Good luck -- Georg Cuntze --------------------------------------- Institut fuer Werkstoffwissenschaften 6 Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg Martensstrasse 6 D-91052 Erlangen Germany

Thank you, This can be done using MSDOS floppies as the medium. I would suspect that your Amiga 2500 has at least OS 2.1 if it has a Toaster in it. CrossDOS came standard with OS 2.1. If you have a high density drive in the Amiga, you can use the 1.44MB MSDOS floppies. If it's just double density, you can still use the 720K. Your PowerMac should have PC-Exchange which allows access to MSDOS 1.44MB or 720K. You could transfer the files on the MSDOS disks between any of the three systems. A better solution if you could afford it would be (providing the Pentium has a SCSI controller) to use either a SyQuest or Zip drive. These will work on any of these three systems with SCSI. This would allow between 95 to 127 megs of data on each cartidge at a time for greater efficiency. If you need more details on setting this up, I could try and help. I've done lots of strange things, like transferring a PC zip archive from my Mac HD partition directly to a 1.44MB PC floppy on my Amiga. :-) > Jeffrey Greenhouse > greenh49@wharton.upenn.edu -- Steve Edford sledford@iglou.com

Thank you, The PC cannot read Amiga format and I don't believe the Mac can either. All three machines, however, can read MSDOS formatted disks. I'm not sure how to do it on the Mac (is it included in the OS?) but with the Amiga, you should get CrossDos. It is a commercial package but is included with Workbench 2.1 and greater. If you are not using Workbench 2.1, let me tell you that it is definitely worth upgrading (or even to 3.1). I believe there is also a shareware program on Aminet that lets the Amiga read/write PC disks. I think it's called MessyDOS but I'm really not familiar with it. Of course, there is one minor inconvenience in using PC disks with the Amiga; you can only use 720K MSDOS disks if your Amiga doesn't have a high density floppy (ie: it is an 880K). Hope this helps. If you have any further questions or need help locating anything, please ask!

If you have 2.1, or later, then you can simply use PC File Exchange as used on the Mac System 7.5 extensions, and simply transfer between systems using either DD floppies (if all you have is a 880k drive), or HD (1.44MB) using an Amiga HD drive (I paid $95 at my local Amiga dealer -- thanks, Dan!) like the Dell for ~$120. Even the last 20 disks from NewTek are in Amiga HD format, so an HD floppy is getting to be more of a requisite item these days IMHO. BTW, I would *highly* recommend that you get the commercial release of Cross MAC, as it adds greater flexibility to your system. God Bless, ILBCNU! -- Dr. Michel J. I know little about graphics, but I thought the files were enormous - and a DD floppy, which is the best you're going to get, will be very labour-intensive. Or are you short of ports, or something? (Maybe the machines are miles apart?) Anyway, I'm not sure of the specifics - we have Parnet or Sernet for Amiga to Amiga, but if you ask here (comp.sys.amiga.misc) I'm sure someone will help you. Not that I know of, but if you have OS 2.04 (or was it 2.1) or better you just have to mount PCx: (CrossDOS) and you can read/write MSDOS formatted disks. -- Remco van Hooff Inet: rvhooff@globalxs.nl Cosys Excalibur BBS FIDO: 2:286/407.39, AMY: 39:153/201.39 4000A2C9F950HAGA/030 http://www.globalxs.nl/home/r/rvhooff ... Thank you, The company Consultron has produced two packages called respectively "CrossDOS" and "CrossMAC" which are file systems from the Amiga and gives it the ability to read/write PC/Mac disks. From version 2.1 (i think it was) of the Amiga operative system the crossdos package came with the machine. Or you could get a "normal" serial cable and a mac one and plug the two machines together. Then get a terminal program for each. "Z-Term" a shareware program for the Macintosh and "NComm" (or perhaps "Term") for the Amiga, make sure they talk at the same speed, 57600 is possibly a good one. Use the Zmodem transfer protocol to transfer a lot of files in one go. It's a lot slower than a network but it's cheeper than buying an ethernet card for the Amiga :) I should think http://www.jumbo.com can provide the necessary software.

You're in luck! I had a similar problem linking a 1200, 4000, and a
PC. At the world 'o' AMIGA show I purchased A program designed to link
amiga to pc, amiga to amiga or pc to pc. Link-It! is it's name and
it was a lifesaver for me because i did not want to buy an ether-card
it comes with software for amiga and pc and a high speed parallel cable
but supports serial as well...
perhaps this is what you need

It is available from AmiNet, installs quite easily, and givet old Amigas the ability to read/write PC diskettes. Just remember that old Amigas used double density diskettes, not high density - you therefore must put your data on 760KB diskettes, not 1.44M. (that is, you use normal PC diskettes but format them as 760KB). And no - it appears there's no way to get PCs to read Amiga 880KB double density diskettes.
