I've upgraded my 6100/60AV to an iMac SE, and thought I'd network them which I've done. One reason I upgraded is that the 6100 had become unbearably slow (even with 72Mb of RAM), plus little disk space left. Getting the iMac on board, I was able to re-initialise the 6100 hard disk, and freshly instal it with System 9, expecting a drastic performance improvement. No such luck. It's slower than ever! Has anyone got any tips for how to speed things up on the 6100? I've changed it down from millions of colours to thousands, turned off a couple of unnecessary extensions, freed up lots of disk space. What more can I do? Any suggestions appreciated. Steven Knowles Home email: slugdog@primus.com.au

I'd really just recommend going back to System 7.6 on that machine. 8 and 9 will run on it, but they're going to be pretty slow. If you haven't already put a Level 2 Cache into the cache slot, that will help speed a bit. About the only other thing that's going to make any significant boost, aside from downgrading the system, is to put an accelerator card into it. And with that nice iMac next to it, I wouldn't bother. :-) -- Garner R. I'm using 8.6 on my 6100 - it runs fast [faster than earlier systems] and is stable. Every system before 8.1 is a bad choice - it simply doesn't support HFS+. And in general, I'll say: forget about what is said on the software packet. I'm running 8.6 and Office 98 - without problems. In my experience it's not the clock that's the bottlenect, it's the amount of RAM available. 72 M + 256 L2 cache, 60 MHz and a 601 processor [+ 32 M on my Apple DOS Compatibility Card, 486dx, 66 MHz]. I even think it runs faster on this 60 MHz computer than on my PowerBook 5300ce. 48M RAM and 127 MHz. 603e processor. -- Per Erik Rnne Vejlebrovej 40, 2. mf./DK-2635 Ishj, DENMARK, EUROPEAN UNION Tlf. + fax: +45 43 73 00 15, mobil +45 28 23 09 92. Those G3 upgrade boards from Newer Technologies and Sonnet are relly
worthwhile upgrades, I have installed three so far and they are truly 8 times
or so faster than a base 6100, they make it faster then my 200mghz 4400.
Speed doubler helps a little if you want to go with just software.

Install a reasonable OS for this computer. System 7.6.1 is the best choice. If you have to have OS9, why not consider a G3 upgrade. -- Patrick McNally p-mcnally@lapin.com

There are, however, two major drawbacks on the Newer Technologies Card: 1. They don't support the Apple DOS Compatibility Card. 2. Although they _do_ support the use of a screen card, no such card is available today. Were Newer Technologies to manufacture such a card, the accelerator would become a better card - remember that the built-in card only supports 640*480 [67 MHz, thousands of colours] and 832*624 (75 MHz, 256 colours]. As the situation is today: I stick with my DOS card. And on the Sonnet card: Unless the situation has changed, it doesn't support either. -- Per Erik Rnne Vejlebrovej 40, 2. mf./DK-2635 Ishj, DENMARK, EUROPEAN UNION Tlf. + fax: +45 43 73 00 15, mobil +45 28 23 09 92.
